Slickrick said "damn...and i thought all viet kids wanted to do was become doctors and lawyers" that reminded me of asking this question - what's your major?

I haven't heard about too many Viets wanting to become lawyers, but I see a lot Viets aspiring to be doctors and engineers. And recently, a lot seem to be going into pharmacy around where I live. I'm just a stereotypical Viet studying engineering. My specific field is biomedical engineering. What about you guys?

Major: Biology
Minor: English

That's what it is right now, for next year that is; i have a feeling i'll change my minor to phycology though. English... confused.gif

Maybe i'll change my major too... Biochem or Chemistry? I don't know.

For now, Biology major, with an English minor is what i'm aiming for.

True man. My parents wanted me to become a doctor too. That's why I majored in Biology when I first entered college.

But then biocraps sickened me so I changed my major to Computer Science. Now I'm having so much fun.

You are 100% correct.

I know people without degrees have really good jobs.

It all depends on who you know, Uni is a big waste of time in my opinion unless your doing medicine,Law or stuff like that.

But other than that its a waste of time and money.

Oh by the way im doing a Computer Science degree bawling.gif

True. Like Bill Gates, Michael Dell for instance.
But do you know that there are probably alot of people without a degree end up in failure ? You probably would not hear their name. Why? think about it! icon_wink.gif

Knowing someone is a plus. Networking is resourceful.
You only talked about the exception part of the reality. People without a degree would in general find a low paying job than one with the degree. But having a degree does not always mean that you will succeed. That's depend on luck, interpersonal skills, personal drive, and other stuffs. People without a degree, they ought to be possessing other skills (such as drive, ambition, etc..) in order to succeed.

Good for you. However with this degree, the effect of the dotcom bubble bust is still lingering. Hopefully you will graduate in the next few years from now.

Majoring in Nursing. Can get a job VERY easily with that field. Plus lots of benifits like insurance and tuition reimbursment. Toying with the idea of getting a Ph.D but I dont think i'm smart enough.

i know but doing it purely out of your own efforts just make you feel better of your achievements, and also it matters if you know somebody not if you don't. you know.

Haha.. man...

I've been through like 9 different majors.

I started out with Computer Science, it was so boring I hated it. Anyhow, my years went like this:

1st Major: Computer Science
2nd Major: Business
3rd Major: Biology
4th Major: Computer Engineering
5th Major: Psychology
6th Major: Molecular Biology
7th Major: Computer Science (yes again, I have no idea why, giving it a 2nd chance lol)
8th Major: Political Science (pre-law)
9th Major: Nutritional Science (pre-med)

Ok, I hated Computer Science. It was the most boring subject I could ever go through. Hours of programming and debugging argh. Not to mention absolutely no girls in that major. That goes for engineering as well. Absolutely no goodlooking girls (I only met 1 girl that was hot and an engineer major --- very very rare). I did Biology thinking I needed that to go to Medical school, but Biology sucked. I didn't find it appealing. I tried engineering but that sucked too. I tried a few intro to law classes and I didn't like the whole thing afterwards and the students that do law just aren't like me personality-wise.

Anyhow, I finally decided to do Nutrional Science. I think its cool. I learn about how different foods affect your body on a chemical level. No, its not Nutrition. It is not an easy degree lol. I got to take Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry and all that stuff. My theory is if it says "Science" at the end of the major, its a hard degree lol.

Hopefully my chances on getting in to medical school is not lost. My years of no set goals/unmotivated/had no idea what I wanted to do really messed up my GPA. But I'll find a way. biggrin.gif Oh, and I'll take my chances with girls in medical school over engineering/computer science anyday haha

I'm thinking of deferring my last year of study (next year) for a trip to Vietnam or SEA to do some humanitarian work like teaching English or helping with the various environmental projects. However, my family vehemently disagrees and wants me to finish my degree ASAP, find work and make good money to lead a comfortable life. Just to let you guys know, deferring one year of study is alot of sacrifice for me to do. I'll be forgetting alot of stuffs, losing $40-45,000 in potential earnings as well as deferring one year of my future career.

Also, I'm used to the good life and good food so I don't know how I'll cope with inadequate accomodation, hygene and food (I'm gonna miss grandmama's cooking).

Alot of thinking and pondering at the moment.

If that what you really want to do, do it. You probably won't have any chance like that in your lifetime. You'll get caught up with family and career and will have no time to do something like that later on.
