If I'm not mistaken, Vietnam's economy is currently the second fastest growing economy in Asia. But I was just wondering how it ranks with the rest of the world?

There are a couple of really small states in Africa (pop. a few million people) whose economic growth rates is the 20% - That's because oil was discovered within their boundaries. Needless to say, the oil wealth ain't trickliing down to the level of the ordinary citizens who continue to live in grinding poverty, and the governance is corrupt as $hit.

The only state outside of Asia which has an economic growth rate comparable to ours that is based on good economic fundamentals and not the fickle hand of fate - that state is Ireland.

Speaking of Ireland, it is known in economic term as the Celtic Tiger which refers to the rapid economic growth of Ireland from the 1990s to 2001/2002.

Vietnam, from 2000s to 2010s, will be like Ireland in 1990s to 2000s.

According to 2005 number. Cambodia was first, then China, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Vietnam in GDP growth. I'm still digging for 2006 numbers.

Here were the top 25 in the world in 2005. Vietnam is 23rd. Source: https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbo...r/2003rank.html.

Rank Country % GDP Growth (2005 est.)

1 Azerbaijan 26.4

2 Angola 19.9

3 Equatorial Guinea 18.6

4 Armenia 13.9

5 Cambodia 13.4

6 Liechtenstein 11

7 Cyprus 10.6

8 Estonia 10.5

9 Anguilla 10.2

10 China 10.2

11 Latvia 10.2

12 Faroe Islands 10

13 Liberia 9.8

14 Kazakhstan 9.5

15 Dominican Republic 9.3

16 Venezuela 9.3

17 Georgia 9.3

18 Argentina 9.2

19 Belarus 9.2

20 Ethiopia 8.9

21 United Arab Emirates 8.8

22 Qatar 8.8

23 Vietnam 8.5

24 India 8.4

25 Libya 8.4

I read official statistics sometimes ago (cant remember where, i may look it up later), where they plot they growth over 15 years or so of india, china, etc. And im quite sure that vietnam's growth is always (or most of the times) higher than india, sometimes by a large margin.

I think that other countries in asia may not grow consistently like vietnam. When you take the average growth over 20 years or so, vietnam's growth is somewhere 7%, if im not mistaken.

I think vietnam's growth will consistently be over and around 8% in the next 5 years. If we can fight corruption effectively (like what the PM promised), i think the 10% mark is within our reach.

The problem with Vietnam is that although most major cities grow with a rate of 10+% for a long time now but the remote, moutainous regions grow so slowly, so the average is reduced. Plus, the infrastructure is bad, so it could be difficult to boost the economy of remote regions.

Well, I think the arm chair economist canhong who provided the CIA link should explain to all of us what the information in there means and why the name of the file is "2003 rank".
