Vietnamese soldier found shot to death in Cambodia
A Vietnamese soldier was found dead with a gunshot wound in northeastern Cambodia where Vietnamese Christian refugees have reportedly been arriving in recent months to flee a government crackdown, police said Friday.
The body of the unidentified Vietnamese soldier in uniform was found on the farm of a Cambodian hill tribe villager near the border with Vietnam on May 23, said Hor Ang, deputy police chief of Rattanakiri province.
"There was a gunshot wound above his belly button. He was lying dead hugging his AK-47 rifle," Hor Ang said.
He said he did not know the exact cause of the death and why or how the soldier happened to be on Cambodian soil.
Vietnamese soldiers came across the border to collect the body one day later, after being informed by their Cambodian counterparts, he said.
A Vietnamese Embassy spokesman said he did not have any information about the incident.
According to media reports, some 160 ethnic Vietnamese ethnic hill tribespeople, collectively known as Montagnards, are hiding in the jungles of Rattanakiri province.
They have fled alleged persecution by Vietnam's communist government following a crackdown on an estimated 10,000 Montagnards who demonstrated over the April 10-11 Easter weekend to demand religious freedom and the return of their ancestral land. The Montagnards are predominantly Christians.
A report published Tuesday in The Cambodia Daily newspaper said the Montagnards are living in small groups under tents in the rain-soaked jungles, suffering from diarrhea and malaria while facing shortages of food and drinking water.
Hanoi rejected those reports Thursday, saying the situation at the border is normal and there was no reason to increase security there, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung.
Cambodia regards the Montagnards as illegal immigrants and reportedly has deported many asylum-seekers back to Vietnam. Government security forces have restricted access to the area to try to prevent people from bringing food to the refugees, according to a Cambodian human rights group, Adhoc.
Hor Ang said he has heard news about the Montagnards hiding in the province but insisted authorities have been unable to locate them.
