Plug Pulled on Vietnam 'Peace' Concert

HANOI (Reuters) - An international concert to promote peace and highlight U.N. anti-poverty goals that would have been the biggest musical event ever in Vietnam has been canceled with just 10 days to go, organizers said on Saturday.
Lionel Ritchie, Gloria Gaynor and Peter Yarrow of 1960s group Peter, Paul and Mary were among those set to entertain 45,000 at Vietnam's national stadium on June 22 until organizers said "insurmountable circumstances" had forced them to cancel.

"Obviously this is just terrible," Matt Taylor, U.S.-based producer of the World Peace Music Awards, told Reuters. He declined to give the reason but said the cancellation was not linked to the government, which had given its blessing.

The communist government strictly controls media and information and monitors movies and publications. All public events must get a license.

Taylor said the concert may be rescheduled in Vietnam later this year.

That seriously sucks. I say continue the concert without them.

I'm not sure Khanh Ly would even want to come back to communist Viet Nam. But there's a tribute to Trinh Cong Son and it's a shame that Khanh Ly isn't a part of it.

Yup, and it's true Without Khanh Ly, Trinh Cong Son is unknown, likewise without Trinh Cong Son, Khanh Ly will not be as famous as she was

Hmm...I'm sure TCS would still be famous without Khanh Ly, maybe not as famous, but his works are still strong on their own. It's no surprise he won the World Peace Music award, since his anti-war songs are depressing as hell. If I were a soldier listening to his songs, I would have thrown down my gun hugging and crying the guy who has been shooting at me.

How old are you that you are a fan of Khanh Ly (and TCS?)? If you're under 30, I'd be surprised. I'm 19 and I don't see too many people my age still listening to them. Here's to not forgetting the classics.

But still without a good singer, Trinh Cong Son music will not well-known, since know one know of him Khanh Ly did make people notice TCS

Khanh Ly is kinda old now, she doesn't sound as good as before. They have great artists back then, with unique voice and all, now a lot of them sound alike!

"Vietnam Peace Awards May Be Rescheduled

Concert organizers today (June 21) blamed communications glitches for forcing the last-minute cancellation of what would have been the biggest international music show ever scheduled in Vietnam.

The second annual World Peace Music Awards had been set for tomorrow at Hanoi's My Dinh National Stadium, with performances from artists including Lionel Richie, Gloria Gaynor, Hootie and the Blowfish and the Black Eyed Peas.

During a news conference today, the concert's executive producer, Matt Taylor, restated his earlier explanation that "completely unforeseen and insurmountable circumstances" forced the show's cancellation. When pressed for specifics, Taylor blamed a "glitch" in communications between organizers and Vietnam Airlines, the national carrier and one of the show's sponsors, for botching arrangements for ticketing and transportation of performers and equipment.

A joint statement from Taylor and the Ministry of Culture and Information, which initially approved the concert, said an underwater Internet cable that broke in early June, leaving millions of users off-line in Vietnam for nearly a week, caused "interruptions of contacts."

Taylor said he hoped to reschedule a scaled-down show in mid-September in Hanoi. But Do Quang Quy, head of the Ministry's Performing Arts Department, said Taylor's suggestion of Sept. 23, 24 or 25 would conflict with other events already planned near those dates, including the Independence Cup soccer tournament and the Asia-Europe Meeting.

The concert, supported by the United Nations, was to honor musicians including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary for their protest songs during the Vietnam War. Twenty-five artists from around the world were expected to participate, with some proceeds benefiting victims of Agent Orange -- a chemical defoliant the U.S. military used during the war."

Khanh Ly, Trinh Cong Son, I've only heard about them. I assume Trinh Cong Son, is song writer, composer. Both artist and song writer cannot be separated.

There is always a reason behind any events, Who can guarantee that all US artist will not ack like Janet Jackson? In Vietnam, as far as I am concerned not many people want to see her t!t$ popping out by accident.

This could be the reason for reschedule.
I were a cultural minister, I would do anything to protect my bloody culture.
