The Vietnamese Party and Government have invested tens of millions of US dollars to help Khmer people reduce poverty and improve their living standards. Transport systems in areas, inhabited by Khmer people have been improved, and all communes are now accessible by motorcar. Irrigation projects have helped local residents shift from old cultivation customs to intensive farming and crop restructuring to meet market demand. Local residents have benefited from the government’s favorable policies for the poor, including exemption from agricultural tax and tuition fees, as well as a preferential health insurance mechanism.
Tan Hiep commune, Tra Vinh province, where Khmer people make up 90 percent of its population is one such beneficiary. Mr. Thach Ngoc Quyen, an official in Tan Hiep commune, said, “With the assistance of the Party, the government and local authorities, local people have shifted to intensive farming with three rice crops and one subsidiary crop per year. Poor households have been provided with preferential loans and technological know-how to develop production. About 150 poor households escaped poverty last year. The general knowledge of local people has also broadened.”
The building of compassion and charity houses for policy beneficiaries among the Khmer ethnic group has increased, particularly in the provinces of Tra Vinh and Soc Trang. Khmer people now feel very happy, the elderly receive good care, and children can attend school.
Mr. Thach Kim Senh, head of the Soc Trang Ethnicity Department, said, “Khmer people live in harmony with other ethnic groups in the province and enjoy very good marital relations.”
The living conditions and general knowledge of Khmer people have improved markedly. The number of Khmer children attending upper secondary schools and universities, as well as those becoming teachers, is increasing. Thanks to the Party and State’s policy for economic development and national unity, many Kinh, Hoa and Khmer people in the Mekong river delta have become better off.
