Vietnam Airlines cancels flight because of grenade joke

Vietnam Airlines, the country's national flag carrier, had to delay a flight on Sunday, after a passenger told a flight attendant that he had the explosives in his luggage, according to sources from the airlines on Monday.

Before the flight from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City taking off, Lam Tan Ngan, 38, and his two friends told the attendant that the luggage contains grenades while she was closing the overhead locker on the plane.

Vietnam Airlines had to delay the flight, and evacuated all of nearly 300 passengers on the plane to check it, but no grenades were found.

This is the third such incident so far this year, the airlines said, adding that the country is mapping out a decree that would impose a fine up to 50 million Vietnamese dong (3,144 U.S. dollars) to those who make bomb hoaxes on aircraft.

They must be giving at least 5 years jail time and $ 50,000.00 fine.

they should be temporary jailed for terrorism charge, you can't do that $hit at any airport and expect not to be severely punish.

"Joke" is probably the wrong word. These incidents are somewhat common in Latin and S. American countries because some @sswipe is running late so he calls in a bomb threat, which naturally delays the plane. American Airlines got into trouble few years ago when their pilot's guide on Latin & S. America explicitly said that this was a Latin culture thing.

These incidents occur in the US sometimes when some jerk-off student is ill prepared for an exam.

It should be taken seriously. They should be fined heavily and banned permanently from getting on Vietnam Airlines. Criminal charge is a bit heavy.

That is the first step to getting public awareness of the problem. Cultural element changes all the time. Joking like that is certainly not a good trait of any culture.

no i was laughing at the fact that if you are hiding grenades to terrorize or kill someone you don't friggin tell the flight attendant. it's like telling the security to be delicate in searching your bag cuz you kept all your stash in inside the coffee bag.

Yeah, they often don't show it b'coz the people are white, believe it or not. Or if they bother to report it, they don't show the faces of the @sswipes who make such retarded jokes.

Southwest airlines was infamous for drunken pilots. In fact, they are also infamous for cancelling flights when customers make jokes about pilots being drunk--i.e. to teach customers a lesson for merely making fun of their airline. Very clever on their part, if one thinks about it.
