"HCM CITY— A Vietnamese student attending the University of Maryland in the US has received a professional certificate from ISC, a US security certificate organisation.

Twenty-year-old Nguyen Dang Phuong spent six hours completing ISC’s 250- question test.

Before taking the exam, he studied a 3,500-page document.

He is the first Vietnamese to win the honour, and one of the few information technology programmers ever to receive the certificate.

With six years of experience in the IT security field, Phuong has received 15 professional IT certificates from international organisations, including CISSP, SCNP, CIW-a, GSEC, MCP+I, Security+sme, Linux+sme and Server+.

Phuong began his university studies in Australia in 2000, and while at school, found errors in Yahoo and Internet Explorer.

He is now working for the US-based computer industry association CompTIA, which employs professional IT programmers from prestigious companies like IBM, Verisin and Ernst & Young.

Phuong was invited to be part of the GIAC’s consulting board, the largest institute of IT security training in the US.

Last year, another Vietnamese made a name for himself in the IT industry.

Twenty-five-year-old Dinh Ba Tien, who is completing his doctoral degree in IT at Huddersfield University in West Yorkshire, England, was selected to attend a space exploration programme held by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

A former lecturer from the HCM City University of Natural Sciences, he competed with hundreds of candidates around the world to win a position on NASA’s Artificial Intelligence programme, where he does research on unmanned spacecraft and robot software. — VNS"
