I can sum stuff up, It's basically after Vietnam became Communist or maybe before as well, Vietnam was trying to purge Han Chinese out of Vietnam, from discrimination to out right killing families. This kind of racism occurs in Philipines and Indonesia. That why you may see lots of Ethinic Chinese with Viet-translated last names. Tran = Chan, Hoang = Wong and etc.
1977 or wutever year, there was a War between Vietnam and China. China whose last Han Chinese Dynasty was Ming had control Vietnam as it's own territory. So, in Chinese belief, it is a territory that is rightfully China's. Since this period was still in the Cold War. Soviets back Vietnam while China has yet fully modernized it's military. The war ended with China losing territory and a heavier death toll. But during the war, China had advanced as much as to Hanoi.
Then in 1984, There was a second Sino-Viet war. This time, it was start because of the Viet Raids. Vietnamese military were raiding in to China's territory killing and stealing. China finally launched a offensive and stop the raids once and for all. They captured Lao Shan, then, skirmishes ended somewhere after that major battle.
I think there was a reference somewhere saying Chinese generals allowed the vietnamese soldiers to come take their dead back to Vietnam under the conditions that they carry a white flag and no arms. They didn't comply and the Chinese soldiers blast the troops who came with no white flag with rifles. About 100 died in the slaughter. Eventually, the Chinese army had to burn the vietnamese dead bodies cuz it was stinking the place up.
