In Okinawa, the habitat of Dugongs, an endangered mammal, is being threatened by the planned undersea drilling survey that Japan's defense authority is planning to conduct in preparation for the construction of a U.S. military base.

The Japanese and U.S. governments are promoting the construction of the huge base in waters off the Henoko district of Nago City in Okinawa.

At an Upper House Committee on Environment meeting on April 15, Japanese Communist Party Iwasa Emi demanded that the government not allow the drilling survey to be conducted.

The Defense Facilities Administration Agency (DFAA) plans to begin digging the seabed at 63 locations within the area of the planned U.S. base.

Iwasa said that experts are warning that 20 out of these drilling points are dugongs' feeding stations and that devastating these stations would further threaten dugongs' survival.

The environment minister promised to discuss with the DFAA the surveys from the viewpoint of environmental preservation. (end)

In Okinawa, citizens opposing the government plan to construct a new U.S. base in the prefecture on April 10 visited the Japanese Defense Agency's Naha Regional Defense Facilities Administration Bureau and demanded a halt to the drilling survey that started at the construction area.

The drilling survey started on April 8 without any notice to the Nago City Assembly.

The government is pushing ahead with a plan to relocate the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station, now located in Ginowan City, to the sea off Henoko District in Nago City. It told the residents of Henoko that a 15-year time limit would be imposed on the use of the new base, but now both the U.S. and the Japanese governments are refusing to accept the time limit. The offshore of Henoko is known for a major coral reef and a habitat for an endangered species of dugong.

A residents' representative said, "The drilling survey will damage the environment. The survey is like 'starting a train before all passengers are on board' because the 15-year time limit on the use of the new base is being shelved." (end)

Ogumo, dugongs are endangered in okinawa, but aren't in other places... They can be reintroduced you know.

So then they really are not a endangered animal then.

The Japanese news source is a joke. They even release news about dead animals. Animals are born to be killed Ogumo, who care about who kill those animals.

If the americans were off killing animals in china I am sure you would be up in arms. You only care about chinese people and chinese animals. Yes I do agree animals are a lower form of life. A campaign was not needed. They are succeeding in killing them by destroying the entire enviornment. Eventually it will have the same result.

If the American killing animals in Japan will destroy the environment, all major news site already release this news. I can only find these weird news at Japanese news site. Moreover, killing one animal in a week or a few days will destroy the environment is a joke. LOL!

First of all, I can’t find any of this news elsewhere. Second, I can’t even find any proof to proof that the US kill the animals for fun. It is the Japanese government who approved the project and harm the endangered animals.

In the news, it clearly stated that is Japan who approve the project. So you cant blame US for that.

And for the Panda, it is completely different. If China government who kill the Panda, than I can blame no one instead blaming the Chinese government. However, if it is foreigners who access China and illegally and kill all the Panda, than I will be angry.

Where in Japan, it is the government itself who approve such project. Whom should you blame?

Geez, surprised to see this sorta thing going on. Whatever the case is guys, no use taking this out on one another. What Ogumo's country did is out of his hands as well as yours.
