When the French first arrived in Vietnam, they sent in their missionaries to burn down Vietnamese temples, slaughtered monks, etc. When the Vietnamese started to retaliate the French sent in their warships in the name of protecting religion(doesn't it sound similiar to what's going on in Iraq right now?).

So, do you think all this caused resentment in the Vietnamese people? Or was there other factors that layed the seed for the Vietnam war? And if the French had never existed, would there have been a Vietnam War?

Resentment? Maybe.

My family is strongly anti-Catholic for many reasons, starting with the Diem regime. From my grandma's point of view the war in the South was due partly to the Catholic leaders of South VietNam as they were opportunistic puppets of the West pocketing money from America.

You can say that Catho lay the seeds to most wars. With USA war on Viets, yeap, Catho was there from the French. But the French also was out done by the USA placing Hoho as their deep operative. This level of understanding some of you may not ready for.

Before the French came, the Trinh family in the North and the Nguyen family in the South fought each other and killed many Vietnamese people. Then Nguyen Hue came in and got a hold of the situation and unified Vietnam into one country. Too bad, he died too early.
