Blazing Her Own Trail: The Rhodes to Oxford
Rhodes Scholarship Trust
Kathleen Tran
Kathleen Tran made history in December 2002 when she was named a Rhodes Scholar, only the 14th IU student (and the second IU woman) to receive the honor in the nearly 100-year history of the international award. The Rhodes Scholarships, the world's oldest fellowships, bring outstanding students from around the world to study at England's University of Oxford. Famous American Rhodes Scholars include former President Bill Clinton and NBA Hall of Famer Bill Bradley.
Tran is well-deserving of the honor. At IU, she was a Wells Scholar who triple majored in music, biochemistry, and biology, while also finding time to serve as a spokesperson for the Vietnamese Students Association and compete on the tae kwon do team.
As a senior in high school, Kathleen received offers from IU, Stanford, and Yale—and her choice made all the difference. "IU allowed me to explore all these different avenues," says Kathleen, who hopes to attend medical school after receiving her master's in biochemistry at Oxford University. "I would find my brain doing things I didn't know it could do."
Kathleen Tran is an academic superstar with a bright future. She's just one example of the thousands of Indiana University students who go on to greatness.
