Ex-Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed said in a speech recently:

"...(the) MIGs are given, are sold to us without any condition, if you feel like bombing Singapore, for example, the Russians are not going to object.

[laughter]

Any Singaporeans here? Or ex-Singaporeans?
"

Dr M continues in the later part of the speech:

"...but this great aircraft called F-18, which we bought from America, after buying it, after several months, I got to know that this aircraft cannot be used for any attacks against any country, even if this is not Singapore."

Upon watching this video clip on Youtube, a Malaysian friend of ours said, "Every country has its Bush."

what good is there too ignite hatred or anger within the brotherhood of malaysian and singaporean....you are highlighting what someone say....but you are also instilling and igniting the bigger wrath.....juz keep what you read to yourself.....if we want to debate everything....then there is no peace on this earth

but funny thing is that...we only have the balls to say something in this kind of avenue..... when the time to go to war....we forgot our bullets and hence....raise the white flag and cabut lari 1st
tangawizi
Actually wanted to hear what fellow AFs on Malaysian chat say about this... not to ignite any thing shrug.gif

I believe Dr M does nor mean what he says..he was just stating an example.

Anyway, spending in military acquisition has been very minimal under Mahathir, he does not have any military ambitions. Mahathir reportedly hates the military due to the fact that he lived under British, Japanese and Siamese occupation during his childhood and he has seen how brutal the military could be...and I believe he did not like that.
tangawizi
Forrest, tell me honest opinion please. If the ex-PM of S'pore uses Malaysia for the same analogy, do you think there will be uproar in the Msian parliament and press?
forrestcat
^Yes, as usual it will.

S'poreans should be glad that such statements come from Mahathir and not some crazy dictator.
tangawizi
Indeed. I am grateful.. thanks for your honest opinion. I do believe the malaysian press and parliament would go berserk if such comments came from a dictatorship that is Singapore. embarassedlaugh.gif
flipcombatmedic
so some Malaysians are pissed off at Singapore?

QUOTE(flipcombatmedic @ Jul 13 2006, 03:23 AM)

so some Malaysians are pissed off at Singapore?

Not Malaysians, only certain Malaysian politicians and Singaporean politicians who bother and have time to hate each other.

This has to do with the fact that S'pore used to be apart of Malaysia and the island was ousted from the federation due to confrontation between the ruling party of Malaysia,BN and the PAP that ruled S'pore. The hostility between these 2 countries political parties still remains until today, hence now and then, a spat will occur between these 2 countries.

juz like wat is happening in the forum lar......hehe

Hi rico, i find it kinda ironical that as msian, u sorta see things from the pov of SG more while, me as Sporean, I like to see things from pov of the msians. Between Msia and SG, in terms of press freedom and saying whatever the hell one likes to without fear of repercussions, I do think we have a dictatorship in SG. But of course, u are right, it will always be relative.. you may see the PAP's stranglehold on their local media as enlightenment itself. icon_wink.gif

BTW, the above blurp on Dr M was sourced from Mr Brown's blog. He was nailed recently by the Pappies for complaining about the high cost of progress in SG.. shrug.gif
pancaindera
the speech is quite funny, but tun m also seems to be seeking abit of attention, by saying something controversial icon_confused.gif

its basically very simple, when you are outside the country that you can see clearly what is the view from outside the box. there are good and bad about malaysia or singapore. There are much to learn from singapore and likewise, for singaporean to learn about malaysia. but sometimes, people cannot detach the emotion between them and failed to see things in a positive perspective.

aiya you say singapore practises dictatorship in press freedom.....but malaysia if say something wrong...ISA liao,...sama sama la dei

to pancaindera...i quite agree with you
tangawizi
well rico, i am outside both boxes (SG and Msia) and i can see that both countries top leaders ain't never gonna reconcile their differences nor copy one another. And both sets of citizens ape their leaders.

For folks like u and me who wanna see change in the mindset and system, we will stand no chance to step into the leadership ladder. Too bad lah mat rico! shrug.gif..

well makcik wizi, I also got no ambition into the political arena. what are we talking here and what are we creating ....we are sharing our opinion and we know darn well that nothing is gonna change anything....its pouring water in the sea sort. but what do we achieve, we get insights and we build our knowledge and we learn something from someone and we get to share our knowledge. Sometime that gives certain satisfaction. And sometimes, if you are lucky....you get to meet the person you chat

yana19384
he wasnt seeking for attention...he was making a joke...in case if u people havent notice...who would want to listen to long speeches made by anybody...so what he did to get people to listen is to crack a joke

n why he chose to joke about bombing singapore?...its because since i was in secondary school rumors in my school started that singapore was going to start a big argument with malaysia and these 2 countries will bomb each other and that was the year that najib did something big to malaysian armed forces (whatsoever)

Mahathir dismisses Singapore as a "tiny" country

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad on Friday dismissed Singapore as a "tiny" country and said it should mind its own business in a racial row between the neighbours.

Responding to criticism from Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew that Malaysia mistreated its ethnic Chinese minority, Mahathir said: "Don't be like that Kuan Yew. You just look after your rice bowl, that is all.

"The country is tiny, don't be too proud," added Mahathir, 81, who ruled Malaysia for 22 years until 2003.

A similar reference about Singapore's geographical size had sparked a storm between Singapore and Indonesia in 1998.

Then-Indonesian President B.J. Habibie referred to Singapore as a "little red dot" in a sea of green -- a reference to the fact the city-state of 4.4. million people is surrounded by Malaysia and Indonesia -- two large, predominantly Muslim countries.

Lee, 83, told a forum in Singapore last week that it was vital for Singapore, a predominantly ethnic Chinese state, to stand up to its bigger neighbours.

Singapore and Malaysia have deep economic ties, but diplomatic relations are often strained. The two countries briefly united as one country in 1963 but separated two years later in a falling out related to racial politics.

Mahathir Slams Kuan Yew As Arrogant

KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Friday slammed Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew for his insulting remarks about Malaysia and Indonesia's treatment of their Chinese minorities, describing him as arrogant and disrespectful of neighbouring countries.

The former premier said Lee was arrogant because he felt he was in a strong position.

"He's not bothered with his neighbours. That is why he deliberately raised something he knew to be sensitive in our country," he told reporters after launching the building fund of the Kemaman branch of the Ex-Servicemen's Association and the district Warriors Day Campaign at Awana Kijal, Beach and Spa Resort in Kijal.

Lee on Friday told a forum held in conjunction with the International Monetary Fund conference in Singapore that Malaysia and Indonesia had problems with their Chinese minorities because they were successful and hardworking and therefore they were systemically marginalised.

He was reported to have said that the attitude of Malaysia and Indonesia towards Singapore was shaped by the way they treated their own Chinese minorities.

They "want Singapore, to put it simply, to be like their Chinese -- compliant", he claimed.

Dr Mahathir said Malaysia could question Singapore's marginalisation of its Malay minority.

"We could ask about the status of the Malays in Singapore, why they are not allowed to bear arms in the military or train to handle weapons. Why is it that the Malays in Malaysia are so capable in the military field but the Malays in Singapore cannot hold high posts (in the military)?

"Why is it that the Malays in Singapore are marginalised to the extent that they have no status at all? This is done deliberately by Singapore. There is no other country that does it like them," he said.

Dr Mahathir said Lee's allegation about the Chinese in Malaysia being marginalised was untrue because there are Chinese holding high posts, for example in the armed forces.

"The Chinese in Malaysia can join the military and rise to become general, major general and so on. But what is the per capita income of the Malays in comparison with the Chinese in Singapore?

"We should have an independent investigation on why the Malays are left behind in Singapore. It is not because they are lacking compared to the Malays in Malaysia but because they are pressured, marginalised and oppressed. That is the kind of government founded on the views of Lee Kuan Yew," he said.

In his speech earlier, Dr Mahathir told Lee not to feel smug about what he had said.

"You should just guard your own rice bowl. You are not that clever. In a small group, perhaps you seem clever.

"But when he goes to China, the Chinese there don't want to listen to him. The Chinese in China don't think much of him and it is a fact that he is marginalised by Chinese in the world," he said.
