http://movies.go.com/movies/G/greendragonthe_2001/index.htmlIt came out in 2001 and it stars Vietnamese actors as well as American ones and it's about South Vietnamese refugees and what they lost during the Vietnam war and has many themes like a South Vietnamese father who was a soldier in the Vietnam war and can't think of anything else other than to commit suicide because of his shame for losing the war.
It also has shows the socioeconomic classes of South Vietnamese who before had classes and each looked down on each other but now they are starting with nothing and are all on the same level.
It got good reviews lots of A's and the average out of most of the reviews is 4/5.
Has anyone seen it yet? I might go buy this movie soon.

It's not a good as Mr. Bui's first movie "Ba Mua / Three Seasons".
Green dragon is his second movie and its about the changes and struggles of our people during the immigration process (specifically) in the US. Some parts are ok (I'm not saying it sucks) but some parts you feel that the main actor (Don Duong) is butt kissing the Americans (its the scripts fault not his). It sort of has the conotation of "white man come rescue sub-white man". Some examples are overemphasis of praise for its a western styled grovery store compared to the more spread out dynamic nature of Vietnamese shopping. Also in the battle between the US and Communists (I'm not into politics - so don't dub me a commi) was too stylized. The communists are known as top tier guerilla warrios, but in the scene it was though the commis were fighting without skill. In the end the commi's won the battle but a subliminal message is sent that "it took a huge amount of commi's to kill a puny group of US soildiers. The part that is "ngua mat" (itchin my eyes) is that no matter who wins and loses, sympathy is always reserved for the caucasions and the viet end up looking like uncivilized (refugees) or barbaric (commi's). Anyways that's just my view and I'm not pushing this on anyone.
Three seasons on thew other hand was awesome. From meaning to cinematogphy (it won some award) to tone and mood was so well put together. Green dragon was more made for a viet/audience while 3 seasons you have to be viet with proficient vietnamese to really soak it up (like the poetry part with the leper teacher). My post is getting to long so if you want more info on the movies just ask. Hope this helps!
Oh - and 3 seasons was so dope - i got a copy
other movies i like
(very old in PAL format) - Thang Bom (comedy from pre war era - gonna post about it...so hilarious)
the "truyen co tich" series - made for kids and cinematography quality is not their due to low funds, but I was born/grew up in canada so I really don't have the innocent viet childhood i wish i had - good stories and morals

the truyen co tich series i got in Viet Nam - there in a lot of book stores (sorry maybe you were expecting them in the US) i would make them available on-line - but im on dial-up and i have an unsupported videocard (which means i can do squat with video editing... my computer has no power for video conversion from vhs to a digital format) so im screwed on that part.
ngo.ngochy you look really cute in your signature (that is you right?)
oh yeah, about green dragon - apparently the viet government didn't enjoy the undertones of green dragon and exiled don duong from viet nam. Don Duong also claimed that he will never do movies again with the americans because what he thought was supposed to be portrayed in the movie was never accomplished and the final product was in no way what he intended, the directive board and whatnot did things their own way and Don Duong didn't enjoy that (remember - to the americans patrick swayze was the main star).
the exile part im not sure - someone's gotta find a source for that - just something i heard
I personally i think the exhile part is crap because it wasn't don duong's fault the movie came out like that. For Don Duong though he learnt about american capitalism the hard way!

I saw Green Dragon and really liked it. The scene where the lady ran outside over hearing the fall of Sai Gon made me boo hoo like a baby.
I like the little boy a lot; he didn't talk much but his expressions were everything.
Plus, the girl who played the vợ bé (second wife) is gorgeous. IMDB.com says she played in Dead Man on Campus, but I can't remember her role in there.
The funny thing is, my dad and uncle didn't like the movie that much - I thought they would find it nostalgic and touching. Maybe I liked it so much because I'm trying to find something to relate to since I did not have to live through the war; and those who did do not find any parts of it glorifying.
I also saw Three Seasons too and liked it, but found it was somewhat slow.
