A few attractions...

http://www.vietnamstay.com/attraction/hue/index.htm

You should visit the royal palace! I thought it was very nice. ^^ And if you are already there, maybe you should attend a preformance in the royal theatre. Ofcourse you have to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda at the bank of the Parfume River, song Huong in vietnamese, since it is one of the symbols of Hue. Though i thought it wasn't that impressive. Hehehe. But a boat ride on the Parfume River to the pagode can be very relaxing. ^^ Furthermore, i found the visits to royal tombs quite interesting too. You can see the differences in building styles as time progresses.

And when the sun sets, board one of those big dragon boats on the Parfume River and listen to beautiful Hue girls, at least on the boat i boarded ^^, preforme some of their Hue songs. Or you can join one of those royal meal setups where you dress up in royal court clothing and eat and drink while listening to live preformances. A word of care here though... wearing those royal clothes could be quite an ordeal, you sweat like a pig in it! And not in the city of Hue, but in the neighbourhood, the old city of Hoi An is a nice place to visit. Maybe a shorttrip to this little city is possible for you. It's an old city with lots of nice shops and cafe/bars. Very nice to go and walk around this city at night. ^^ Lots of tourists though.

Not Hue, but i thought this place is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam, the bay of Halong. A boattrip, visting caves or just relaxing on a beach, it's sooo nice! ^^ Domestic flights are pretty cheap in Vietnam. So, maybe it's an option.
azn_viet
Hue is really fun with its traditional Vietnamese buildings and culture.
GenomVirues
Go snake catching in the rice fields, climb coconut tree, and visit mosquito nest (take of your shirt and let them suck on you) to test your endurance. Or if you want…get a stick and poke a hornet nest then run like hell. Good times…

I stay away from the city coz it smells like $hit.
Zeretual
Thanx for all the suggesstion
Fable
Cool when are you going? I'm going from July 28 to August 20 or so. I'll be in Saigon, but I might catch a flight up to Hue or something. Hot and sticky bus rides suck lol.

Oh yeah, this'll be my first time too.
Zeretual
i ll be going either the 6th of july gonna arrive at saigon and then fly to hue
Bebob
Zeretual (Fable), if you arrive in Saigon, it would be a shame if you don't stay there for a while and discover the city! There are so many songs about Saigon and everone has visited it, why not join the group of people that enjoy bringing back memories about Saigon. Hehehe. biggrin.gif

But brace yourself for the heat. Especially in Saigon. Humid and hot. Yikes! And take/buy hats/baseball caps with you or you will or you'll go nuts. You haven't seen Saigon if you haven't seen it's nightlife. Go out at night and check out one of those big bad a$$ cafes/bars with or without live music. There is so much life when the temprature is more agreeable. And the Saigon people seems to know how to enjoy life. ^^ Check out Quan Ngon too. A place with good clean food, cosy atmosfeer and nice price/quality. You sometime have to wait because they are quite popular. ^^

For the rest i would say... Go visit Hue and enjoy your first trip to Vietnam!! laugh.gif

ps. Maybe you can tell us something about your trip when you get back. ^^
Fable
haha, we're staying in Saigon for the most part. I said I might fly up to Hue.

You lucky folks!!! Must sure to share pictures when you guys get back. Have a great trip!

If its your first, expect the noise of motorbikes and its horn and the crowd. there are going to be people everywhere on the streets. becareful with your belongings and careful when cross the street. big vehicles have the right of way over there. if you grew up abroad, don't expect its going to be like where you live. Its going to be different and I'm sure you will have a great time!!!!!! beerchug.gif
moj0e
do you have family over there? im guessing you do, if so ask them to take you places. If not then i suggest you go on one of those tours.
Zeretual

Ha Noi is famous for it's dog meat restaurants and its 'o mai'. If you are adventurous enough you can go try out some dogmeat. I was too scared to do that. embarassedlaugh.gif At the market you have these o mai stands, you can go and sit there. Enjoy tea with so many different kinds of o mai. If you like o mai, don't forget to visit Gia Loi. For me, this little shop has the best ginger o mai! ^^ And visit Ha Long Bay!! biggrin.gif

Not really petdogs, though some maybe dogs which use to be pets. You never know. Hehehe. But i think most of the dogmeat are from dogs breed for their meat. And yes they kill them and cook, grill, stir fried, etc. I don't think they eat them while they are walking around on the plate. Those dogs might bite back! laugh.gif

Ice tea is mostly served at cafes/bars/restaurant. It's for free and you can drink as much as you want. It is tea made from tealeaves in the pot, at some places stronger than at others. But always without suger. If you want sweet tea there is lipton icetea or other brands, in cans. But at those o mai stands you will get warm tea or tea that isn't cold. Some word of caution when you are drinking icetea. Watch out when drinking those at not so clean looking places. The ice cubes could be made from tap water. With all the germs and other contaimination in it! You can get pretty sick of that. But expect to be a little bit sick once in while when you visit Vietnam for the first time. I often enough had tummy ache, but nothing that was serious enough to keep me in bed or at home. But i also must admit that i've eaten alot on the streets. I just can't let those yummy looking food pass me by without tasting it! embarassedlaugh.gif

There are homemade drinks, like fresh juices. And most lemonade are chilled. If not you can always ask for icecubes. Just keep my previous warning in mind. ^^ And what i found to be really delicious, once in a while, is fresh young coconut juice! Though, i only drank those when they were chilled in the refridgerator. They will slaughter those coconut for you and give it to you with a spoon, straw and a paper umbrella, if you are lucky. Nice! ^^ Sugercane's juice! I've had that alot too! Hehe. Watch them press some sugercanes for you and enjoy it with some crushed ice. And if you want it to go, no prob. They just buddle everything in a plastic bag with a straw for you. Sooo sweet tasting! biggthumpup.gif

Take a train from Saigon to Hanoi, takes 36 hrs, see the coast. You can get AC rooms w/ bunkbeds, its cool, and not that expensive. Or take the hovercraft from Saigon to VungTau, it's pretty fast, and no traffic. And bring pepto-bismo/immodium AD. That saved me!

GO HUE!!!.. my family is from there.. been there once, going again next summer! have fun -=]

I don't think they put dogmeat in pho, so you can eat that without a guilty concience. Hehe. And yes, there are a lot of candies in Vietnam. But vietnamese people like their candy to be sweet. Way to sweet for my taste. I bet dentist in Vietnam are having fun with all those sweet tooth vietnamese. ^^

So you might enjoy it there when it comes to candy. laugh.gif
