05/17/2004 -- 11:56(GMT+7)

May 17 (VNA) - A Vietnamese piano student has defeated contestants from European and American countries to win first prize at a contest for piano soloists held in New Jersey, the United States.

Vu Ngoc Linh now is a student at a US university of music after receiving a full scholarship. He was born in 1982 and started learning piano when he was 6. Before he was sent to the US, Linh studied at a school for talented young musicians in Moscow, Russia and then at the Ha Noi Conservatoire.

Linh has been invited to perform with the US Rowan Symphony Orchestra and also to play at the Music Festival in Minnesota in July.-Enditem

HA NOI — Vietnamese photographer Vuong Quoc Kim won a special prize at the International Arts Photo Contest Asahi Shimbun held in Japan recently.

Kim’s photo Vu Dieu Mat Troi (Sun’s Dance) was one of 15 prize-winning photos shot by Vietnamese photographers. In all, the contest handed out 130 prizes after receiving 7,944 entries from 36 nations and territories.

The 64th annual contest was organised by the Japanese Photographic Association and the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

The organising board announced last Friday the names of the other Vietnamese photographers to claim Asahi Shimbun prizes. Among the list was Le Hong Linh. The Photographic Society of America’s magazine, Photography, ranked Linh fourth on its list of the world’s top 10 black-and-white photographers for 2003.

All award-winning photos will be on display next year throughout major Japanese cities. — VNS
