Not sure if this has already been discussed or not, but how do you spell it? I am not quite sure, but I have been told that there are no two syllable words in the Vietnamese language. So if thats true, then why do I see more instances of Vietnam than Viet Nam?

Vietnam is the western version and Viet Nam is the Vietnamese version. The word Viet and Nam are actually two words that have two meanings so we Vietnamese don't usually put them together as one word.

Yea, I suppose it does not really matter, but I have to say that I forgot about the different meanings of the two words. Ha ha, I'm quite out of touch with the Vietnamese culture.

And I'm suppose you're loosing your roots. Viet = Viet people (Yue ethnic group) and Nam = South. Thus Viet Nam means the Southern Viet people.

Vietnam Or Viet Nam either way its still the same country and people so it don't matter how you spell it. But the general spelling is Vietnam and for the Vietnamese's version is Vie^t Nam.
