Vietnam plan to make people taller


Vietnamese people are smaller, on average, than other East Asians
The Vietnamese Government has launched a new initiative to make its population taller.
The $40m programme, which is designed to promote better nutrition and healthy living, will be introduced to schools across the country.

"We are still much shorter than other Asian countries like China and especially Japan," said Dung Nghiep Chi, the man behind the scheme.

"We are now working on a programme of nutrition and physical exercise, to boost the height and weight of young Vietnamese people," he told the BBC's World Today programme.

According to Ha My, from the BBC's Vietnamese service, many people in Vietnam want to gain that extra few inches.

She said that young people consider height a mark of beauty, and it is one of the top considerations for teenage girls looking for boyfriends and even friends.

There are also height restrictions which prevent small people from taking part in beauty contests or becoming air hostesses.

Older people associate height less with beauty and more with nutritional status - and an indication that their children are healthy and strong.

"My mother is very short, but I'm not too bad as I have been given highly nutritious food and plenty of milk," said one woman.

Another man was more direct. "I want to be 10cm taller. I think tall people are beautiful," he said.

I'd read an article not too long ago; it was saying that the height of Vietnamese people stayed the same from the 1930s to around the mid 1980s, due to all the sh!t happened in our country.

That's true. Our people suffered from wars and economic hardship, thus malnutrition among the children and kids alike. Hopefully with economic improvements, our people will grow taller. LOL

Seems weird though maybe its the diet...Viets in America/West fed a Western diet are very large with the right exercise of course.

Food seems like a big factor, China is about as poor as Vietnam, if not poorer, yet they have much more 6 footers and some 2m. As for the girls, I've seen some 1.8m+ girls, not as common as Westerners but still...I have yet to see a 2m guy from Vietnam.

Yes if you don't drink enough milk as a little kid then then you have no chance of becoming taller(unless you have good genes) because when you reach a certain age your bones don't develop anymore.

Bryon, it doesn't quite explain why Northern Chinese (who are about as poor as Vietnamese are) generally tend to be TALLER than their richer Southern Chinese couterparts.

Japanese and South Koreans only got taller once they started to copy a Western diet much richer in calcium and protein (i.e. more dairy products).

Please note that as GDP per capita for CHina stands at $1,090 today, this is inaccurate. This amount has been averaged out against all areas in China, Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou obviously have higher GDPs per capita.

80% of Chinese live in the countryside where the GDP per capita stands at $540 - this is close to the GDP per capita of Vietnam....that is why I commented that China is nearly as poor as Vietnam.

Shanghai is thought to be the current tallest of all Asians on average in Asia. They average 5'8.5" (174cm) as reported by Xinhua.net. Koreans by statistical evidence is 2nd at 173.2cm, Japanese men at 170.9cm and Taiwanese at 170cm.

What is the average food that a Northern Chinese person eats?

i am 5-10..no clue how tall that is in metric..but what i dont get is..i know koreans and northern chinese are tall..but japanese are shorter than us by average..and they are rich as heck

Yeah they are rich but they mostly eat fish, which is healthy but it doesn't let you grow as much as eating beef and chicken. lol

Good economy doesn't always means good nutrition, nutrition depends on dietetical preference. An good example is that sourthen China is better in terms of economy but northern Chinese are taller.

And Gene is the most important factor for height, nutrition is in the second place, to improve height by means of impoving nutrition can only take effect after generations of efforts.

If so; places above Shanghai (or Yangtze River) include:

- Chinese bread (variation of Turkish bread)
- Noodles
- Dumplings
- Heavy hearted stuff
- Mutton (Lamb)
- Pork
- Veggies

Rice is eaten but NOT as common, until years ago, I heard rice was a rarity up there. Northern China (above the Yangtze river) is far too cold to properly grow any rice and too dry to water rice paddies.

Vietnamese eat chicken and Southern Chinese do too quite often, a lot of Chinese are around 5'5" to 5'7".

It seems like the Manchurian area produces tall but not stocky people. Koreans are far more stockier than Chinese at the same height.

Areas around Shandong, Jilin (east of Beijing) where rice is nearly not eaten seems to produce very tall, skinny people. Wendy Deng (Rupert Murcdoch's wife) is 183cm (6') and she hails from Shandong, other notable metions are Confucious (apparently a very big man) and Gong Li who is reportedly around 5'9" (175cm).

The sad conclusion is about to emerge that rice lover is apt to be shorter.

oh okay i see now. cool im right in between 5'5" and 5'6" . hmm thats strange, cuz my friend sent me of this model in vietnam that he likes and it said she was 1m67 so i thought that was big...i thought you had to be like at least 5'8" to be a model right? or maybe thats just america...hmm but even in korea they dont take you seriously unless your about 5'9 or so...thats why i got reject , they told me i was way too short . also probably cuz i didnt have any plastic surgery to enhance myself...gee life is so unfair
