Hi I'm from Sydney, Australia.

In the state of New South Wales, Australia we have something called the UAI (University Admission Index) and it is based on a scale of 1-100. Normally only if you achieve a score of at least 65 will you be admitted into university. A score of around 75-85 is needed for engineering (depending on university), 80-85 for biotech, 85-95 for commerce/business/economics, a score of 90-95 for law and in excess of 97 for medicine (combining with an interview. I'm doing Bachelor of Business at the University of Technology, Sydney (www.uts.edu.au) and my course's admission score was 93.25 for 2003 (the year I was admitted into uni).

I'm interested in learning about the American system and the GPA.

I'm interested in learning about the American system and the GPA.

Former Melbourne University student, graduated in 2001 (1999-2001), Commerce degree (majored in Accounting). Currently working as a Business Analyst. My course required a ENTER score (I believe it is similar to the NSW system) of about 94 at the time, though selection is much more complex than that, but that is another story.

Throughout uni, we had the GPA system introduced in my final year, based on the American model. It was designed to pick out graduates who wanted to go onto masters and phd, but i didn't see it much of a indictor. Basically what they did was convert the score into a 1,2,3,4 then divide by the # of subjects you studied that sem to get a cumulative GPA. Since melb uni had a complex h1...h2a...etc system I will use the normal Pass...system to explain, 1 was awarded for a pass 2 for a credit, 3 for distinction and 4 for high dist., 0 fora fail.

I don't know much about the USA system, but I believe it's a GPA system based entrance selection process. Though I've heard you need to write essays and stuff to apply into unis and that extra cirricular activites also attract GPA points.
