Interesting mix especially the MAT 49 where these left by the french or did they aqire them later?

I believe it was left by the French, but I don't think the type is still in use.

What happend to the American weapons the South Vietnamese army had?

Most of it were absorbed into the Vietnamese army, some were canniblized for spare parts. They have seen action in Cambodia and is still in service in small numbers.

I think that the Vietnamese are the international masters of cannibalization, scrounging and improvisation.

I realise that this subject is somewhat polictical but do Vietnam have anny enemies in the neighbouring cuntries?

The diplomatic answer is that we have no enemies. The practical answer is that we keep an eye on all potential threats (without necessarily naming them).

I've seen Viet soldiers in new uniform (camo type) before. Wondering if there is any practical reason for them to still retain the weird-looking pit helmet?

I didn't know men had to go to military service in Vietnam too. How many years do they have to serve?

Now that Vietnam is in peacetime; it's 2 years for regular NCO and soldiers . 3 years for commanding NCOs, specialist NCOs/soldiers (trained by the military) and NCOs/sailors on naval vessels. Not sure about officers.

I notice some have crew cut and some don't. There is no standard hair cut in the arm service?

Is there boot camp? are those pic to before boot camp? they look out of shape.

Look like they're on their way to boot camp. Like their predecessor, the NVA troops, the current Vietnamese soldiers are still not big on look. But I have no doubt that they're well-trained.

Looks don't matter. It's the willingness to fight, the quality of the training and the quality of the combat leadership.

What you say is true for protecting a country. But look matters to me if I want some army wallpaper for my computer.

I'm sure the Vietnamese army have new camo uniforms, but its not widespread.

They should be proud to serve their country. They are like all other soldiers, they love their families and nation. I think the uniforms and pith helmets not only look good but can have that intimidating look. As another mentioned. They kicked the U.S. @$$ wearing them. Also the women with them are great to look at too !!!!

Man, when are we going to grow a couple of inches taller? Our soldiers are so short and too skinny.
