They're grown by a student from Can Tho university. I don't know how he does it though, maybe like Kpham said. These watermelons are freaking expensive, like $40 a pair. you can read the article in Vietnamese here

the japanese figured this out. i read that the japanese invented this so to not have watermelons roll around in the refrigerator. however, they are sold for like 80 bucks or something like that in japan; only the rich, once again, can afford it.
