Viet Nam readies for trade negotiations with Japan
(07-02-2006)
HA NOI — The first round of negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement between Viet Nam and Japan will kick off in mid-February, according to the Ministry of Trade. The agreement will facilitate trade activities between the two countries.
Negotiators will discuss issues regarding industry, service and agriculture.
In 2005, the trade volume between Viet Nam and Japan reached US$8.16 billion.
Viet Nam exported $4.5 billion worth of garments and textiles, furniture, electric cables and shrimp to Japan, registering a trade surplus of $900 million. — VNS

Back in the old days, we did quite a bit of trading with Japan through the port of Hoi-An, so another way to look at it is that things are coming back full circle. The nice thing with trade is that if it's done right, its a win-win situation for both parties.

Vietnam need all the help and all the friend that it can get!! The more there is, the merrier!
In due time, we can catch up to many rich asian country such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Here is another news in relation to Japanese and Vietnamese relationship...
It is reported by a communist newspaper in Vietnam Nhan Dan
Japan promotes investment in Vietnam
The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) has just signed a co-operation agreement with Japan's Mitsubishi Tokyo UFJ, one of the world largest banks, to promote Japanese investment in Vietnam.
Under the agreement, the Mitsubishi Tokyo UFJ will hold periodical conferences on investment procedures in Vietnam for Japanese investors.
For its part, Vietnam will inform the bank about amendments to investment regulations and Japanese businesses' operations in Vietnam.
In the short term, Vietnam will use Mitsubishi Tokyo UFJ's financial resources to exploit coal and improve electricity and fuel infrastructures.
In the future, Mitsubishi Tokyo UFJ will co-operate with Vietnamese financial agencies to provide funding for Vietnam's enterprises. (VNA)

I don't think that the Japanese are that ambitious. I think it's their egos being bruised by being b!tch slapped by the PRC government and being at the receiving end of rioting in the PRC, after all the investments they had poured in. In addition, it's an overwhelming desire to cut their risks and limit their exposure in the PRC by investing in Vietnam and trading with Vietnam. Whatever their motives, the Japanese are welcome.
