I didn't know that each dynasty had their own representative dragon. Cool. Here they are.

Ly era

Tran era

Le (Ha^.u) era

Mac era

Nguyen era

21st century era

I'm guessing they served as signatures for imperial documents. icon_smile.gif Just kidding on that last one hehehe. biggrin.gif

I like Spyro hehe. Actually, gotta give it to the Nguyens on this one. The dragon looks most detailed and possesses an air of grandeur that seems to be saying "Hey, don't mess with me." icon_smile.gif What about you guys?
Nam Quoc Son Ha
I'll go with the Nguyen too. Like all things in history, they become more refined through the progress of time. beerchug.gif

Yes...
Nam Quoc Son Ha
Dai Viet will go for the Tran's no matter what, even IF it's an eel.

LOL... that's because I am a Tran. Hhhhehehee...

Le era seems very classical and ancient.
Tran era seems a bit modern and more powerful and Ly's, and the dragan is actually moving.
Le era shows the dragon preparing to show power by moving its body, which symbolizes the greatest height the Dai-Vietan empire under Ly Thang Tong.
Mac era shows more of a traditional way of the dragon with people in it.
Nguyen era seems too be much influenced by China and Europe.
Nam Quoc Son Ha
Someone is getting very creative and imaginative.

embarassedlaugh.gif Indeed, or a tadpole JK! I am a half Tran too.

Good observation Dai Viet. I guess each dragon is unique because of the time period. The designs are respective of Viet Nam over the ages and I guess that is why the Nguyen's would have a Western look.
Nam Quoc Son Ha
I don't see any "western look" in the dragon emblem of the Nguyen.

Perhaps it is how the dragon is situated, in a full-frontal figure instead of the regular 2-D Asian style.
Nam Quoc Son Ha
I still don't get it. It looks perfectly and 100% oriental to me.

Same here. And I have seen other Oriental dragons that face forward or at an angle. If it were less serpentine, or if it had prominent wings, I might consider it to resemble a Western dragon more.

Well I don't know, Asian dragons are often drawn from left to right but the Nguyen dragon itself doesn't look Western. In my opinion, it's just the position of the body, making in more 3-D which is more of a Western style. icon_smile.gif
Nam Quoc Son Ha
If you're talking about 3D, what do you say of the dragon reliefs and engravings on pillars and walkways of the Chinese and Vietnamese Forbidden Cities and so on? Aren't they 3D as well?

He is talking about the perspective of viewing the dragon from the front or at a large angle, instead of the side view.
drunk_on_tea

Reliefs are inherently 3-D but the perspective is still represented from right to left, look at these columns. I'm just saying in general, that is how Asian art often is like. The dragon of course looks Asian, but not how the body is usually drawn. Just compare the Nguyens to the ones above it.

Arghhh I'm a girl! embarassedlaugh.gif
