Just saw this and thought it is kind of neat. There is a contest for the statue of Thanh Giong that will be installed in Ha Noi. The 4 finalists are being voted on and were chosen from 28 entries.

#1

#2

#3

#4

Only the 3rd and 4th entry can be seen clearly but I think I would choose number 3, the last one looks futuristic almost (with the metallic finish) and Thanh Giong can be mistaken for a Roman general.
Nam Quoc Son Ha
I vote for number 3 too. It's more subtle and in a sense looks traditional.

Would love to see the other two entries clearly though.

#3 gets my vote too..
DAI_VIET
Number 4, because the horse looks like it's running, not jumping like number 3.

But how big will this statue be?

Can non-Vietnamese vote? embarassedlaugh.gif

I agree with DAI_VIET, I like #4 the best.

#3 is a good piece of artwork but it seems too soft for a warrior.

I'm afraid not icon_redface.gif

But I just assumed he was a hero/warrior.

Who is he?

Of course you can Kulong.

The statistics so far:

#3 - 2
#4 - 3

Those who voted for #4, were you guys all_coholic.gif- ? hehe JK. Both are good, but 3 has the bamboos which make it look more traditional but I guess the modern look with 4 would best suit Viet Nam in this century.

As for the size:

Saint Giong’s statue may become biggest in Vietnam

With a height of between 25 to 40 metres and a weight of around 45-50 tonnes, the statue of the legendary hero, Thanh Giong (Saint Giong) which is expected to be built on the Da Chong peak of Soc Mountain, is set to become the biggest statue in Vietnam.

Under the project, which has been approved by the Prime Minister in March last year, the Saint Giong statue will be erected on Da Chong peak within the Soc Temple site.

The Da Chong peak lies in the centre of the Soc Mountain range and links with legends on Saint Giong. The legend has it that Saint Giong rode on an iron horse and, after helping the people defeat the invaders, flew to Heaven from the Da Chong peak.

The Hanoi authority is to start the construction of a traffic system surrounding the peak with ascending and descending paths. Those who want to reach the peak will have to pass the Bia pagoda where there are steles recording Saint Giong’s contributions. Descending from the peak, they can sometimes stop at the stop-over points which are intended to symbolise Saint Giong’s horse's footprints and witness a large rock which is said to be the Saint Giong’s armour left over before he flew back to the heaven.

Saint Giong’s statue is expected to be made by bronze or granite on the 297 metre high Da Chong peak.

More than 30 architects, sculptors and historians made a site survey on May 7, 2003 to seek inspiration for the hero’s memorial design. In general, they agreed that image of Saint Giong and his horse should be stylised. However, the Saint’s costume are now still under discussion.

A statue of Thanh Giong (Saint Giong) is to be erected on Da Chong peak, Soc Temple, Soc Son District, Hanoi. The statue will stand at a height of 25 to 40m, and weigh 45 to 50 tonnes.

Saint Giong by Nguyen Tu Nghiem
The statue, which maybe the largest in Vietnam, has been commissioned by the Hanoi People’s Committee and was approved by the Prime Minister in March 2002. It will be built atop Da Trang, Da Chong peak.
According to Nguyen Van Lam, Director of the Soc Temple relic site, this is the most suitable location for the construction for its the height, surface and historical meaning. Da Trang is said to be the place where Thanh Giong doffed his armour before riding a horse into the heavens.

The contest for the statues design has entered the second phase, after being launched on April 28, 2003. Preparations for an access road to Da Chong peak have been implemented.

Mr Lam said that the Thanh Giong statue must have the suitable stature and positioning to enable visitors to see him clearly from any and all nearby locations. The statue is to be made of bronze or granite, which will have longevity in the climate at 297m above sea level.

The Thanh Giong legend was the first to highlight the non-violent spirit of the Vietnamese people. Legend has it that his mother fell pregnant with him after having unexpectedly trodden on a gigantic god's footprint. He spent three consecutive years on a stone bed without uttering any word and giving no smile. When the Hung King's called for arms against the An aggressors, he sat up briskly and expressed his aspiration go to the front. He then ate at an alarming rate and grew very quickly. With armour, an iron helmet, and an iron staff riding atop an iron horse, he rushed impetuously into the An aggressors. Once his iron stick had been broken, he pulled took a bamboo staff and used it as a powerful weapon. After having beaten the enemy to pieces, Thanh Giong and his iron horse flew up into the sky and vanished without a trace.

Drunk_on_beer, I think the votes are tied right now, with 3-3.

I am glad that Vietnam is doing this, it makes a lot of symbols and show our history's pride. I love it, they should start making a statue of Tran Hung Dao, I haven't seen his statue yet.

Number 3 is more appropriate. Thanh Giong is an ancient warrior-legend so it is appropriate there is a classical touch to it. Regarding the comment about the horse running, I think it leaped into heaven.

That is totally off the mark I'm afraid kulong. embarassedlaugh.gif

The poem wasn't referring to any specific place or area. It was simply stating that the southern land is where the king lives.

According to the Nom translator

Sông - - onomatopoeic for the sound of falling rain; an ancient name for Wushui; a place in Guangdong

It was the only meaning for Sông

Yeah, I think Viet Nam is concentrating on erecting national symbols and there's constantly new projects underway. Just the other day, I was reading that the newest proposal is the construction of an arch like other great empires have, Arc de Triumph of France and the countless arcs belonging to Roman emperors (Trajan, etc.)

Yes! I love that arch, it stands for victory. Everytime the Roman won a battle, they march their armies under that arch in Rome. Vietnam should build it, too. beerchug.gif

On my last trip to Vietnam, I saw so many memorials and parks dedicated to fallen soldiers of the Vietnam War. I guess we Vietnamese have a culture of honouring people who has contributed to Vietnamese history and make us the people we are now. So proud to be a Vietnamese beerchug.gif

kulong, Sông is a Vietnamese word, not Han-Viet or Nom word. Han-Viet for it is Ha`, which means river. There could be a mistake with the translator but I'm sure the word is very new.

I like number 4 more.

The day soldiers from both sides are commemorated the say way in Viet Nam and the day that the recent civil war is taught from all angles will be the day that I can truly be happy.
As for the arch, I think that it's a bit much, I think we should work on establising Vietnamese modern architecture instead of looking over to the West for inspiration.
