There's a new sci-fi movie out on DVD called Serenity. At the very beginning scene which last about 4 or 5 minutes, there is a variation of the Vietnamese Ao Dai worn by a minor character. (She's sort of like a Condi Rice character.)

At any rate, it's definitely an Ao Dai with white pants and all, but the sleeves were cut short.

The movie is attrocious, but for the ending. The actors are about as good at acting as Paris Hilton or Kato Kaelin. It's the KMart rip-off of The Matrix.

Did they ask for our permission for featuring our Ao Dai in their cheap movie? madgo.gif

They will have to pay for copyright piracy embarassedlaugh.gif2 embarassedlaugh.gif2 embarassedlaugh.gif2

Nah, I suspect that the costume designer got the idea when he was eating at Pho 54 on Bolsa Ave. during the previous Tet.

Whoa there now! nono.gif Let's not get rash. We'd be opening up a can of worms, each riding on a boomerang. Little Saigon shops are full with pirated music, movies and software. Better let this one slide...

I was gonna point out the ao dai part in Serenity, you're quite fast embarassedlaugh.gif
Also, there was a guy in this movie who was wearing our ao ba ba too.

I've noticed alot of non-Asian entertainment in the West that are using our ao dai. Like tutu said, did they ask our permission before they can feature it? Or they think we should be proud because it's Hollywood embarassedlaugh.gif2

Yeah, as Vietnamese Americans gradually rise to prominence in the coming generations, and as Vietnam rises in the coming decades, I pretty damn sure that the Ao Dai, or a variation of it, will find it's way into mainstream Western fashion. It is a truly elegant design. It hugs the curves of women nicely.

Hollywood stars like Sharon Stone, Cate Blanchett et al, have been wearing the Chinese style shirts (dresses?) in both television & magazine interviews.
