I grew up in overseas but I speak only Vietnamese at home, unlike some of my pretentious friends who came much later than me but pretend to forget Vietnamese and speaks half English half Viet with a fobby accent, very much like this supernova character.
To all overseas Viets out there, please preserve your forefathers' culture, tradition and language among other things that makes us who we are today.

From personal observation, I notice some vietnamese use english even between Vietnameses there are three reasons:
1. They want to show they have a very good command of english
2. They are afraid to use incorrect vietnamese words
3. They grew up here and mostly hang out with native friends
Calculus = Đại số
Geometry = Hình học
Chemistry = Hoá học
Biology = Sinh học
Whatelse you want to know?

It's weird when people speak Vietnamese with the two English words "You" and "Me." I know they are trying to be polite, but ugh.

The Vietnamese form of these two words is awkward to use sometimes. "Anh" and "em" are kinda gay to use. "Tuoi" or "ong" or "ba" sounds so distant and impersonal. And then there is "bac", "chu", "co", etc. which are also awkward to use when referring to someone you just met -- you don't know how old they are relative to you and so on.
"You" and "me" in English are great and simple. It's weird to mix those in an English conversation though!

Ditto..
When I was young, if I did not speak Viet at home with my family, I would get the sh%it beat out of me.
So, I am somewhat bless to speak more Viet to Viet, than English. But like everyone else, it is almost impossible to not speak English sometime...

I speak Vietnamese to whoever I known can speak fluent in Vietnamese. I go in great length to speak Vietnamse even if that person talk back to me in English. When I speak Vietnamse, I speak total Vietnamse. I do not inserted English in a Vietnamese conversation. If I can't translate certain english word into Vietnamse, then I say it in english.
A few years ago during my first two years in college, I only spoke Vietnamese to my family and none others. My friends were mostly non-Vietnamese. And if I met Vietnamese in VSA, they spoke english. My Vietnamese began to deteriorate. To and extend that I was mumble to find the correct Vietnamese words when I speak Vietnamese to my family. I went to the library and began to borrowed all form of Vietnamese books from novelt to poetry. I began to speak to Vietnamese speaker in Vietnamese even if they relied back in english. Personally, I didn't like people who can speak Vietnaemse and yet relied me in english. But at least when I speak to them in Vietnamese, it stimulated their listening skill. All of my Vietnamese friends known how I feel, they, all, spoke to me in vietnamese. Since most of my American Vietnamese friends can only speak Vientamese at secondary high school level, I reached out to the international Vietnamese students at my college. They rarely socialize with American Vietnamese. I tried to join them with VSA when we had our social meeting but both groups tend to repell each other. From the international Vietnamese students hang out, we discussed in vietnamese with topics the like of women inequality, sexual liberation, political corruption etc,. They used technical terms and jargon in which I can learn from them a lot. Most of them are master and PH.D students with previous working experience in Vietnam and some are highly connected in the political arena. I learned a lot about Viet Nam through their personal experience.
I advise some of us to reach out to the international Vietnamese students in your college if you have a chance. You don't have to believe that they're right (about communism). You just listen to them and hear their point of view, avoid being self-righteousness or placate yourself on a higher moral ground and passed judgements on them.

Depends on who i'm talking with. With my viet friends who are more fluent in
vietnamese i speak vietnamese with them, with my viet friends who are more fluent in english i speak in english with them, and with others i only speak english. Sometimes when i don't know how to ttranslate an english word into vietnamese i just keep it in english and vice versa.
