A Prince on horseback

The Prince wears a traditional gown, with a green head-dress, a gold title-plate, and sits astride a horse. He has four escorts: two in front of him, one with a signal-drum, the other a sword symbolizing authority; two behind, one holding a feather fan, the other a parasol.
As the main character, the Prince is depicted in large size to emphasize his divine rank.

Abundance

This simple picture of a girl with a duck comes from the saying "A hundred wealthy children" (Bach quy tu). The duck symbolizes the attributes of womanhood that all families desire to see in their daughters - fineness, kindness and fertility.
The duck is often depicted together with a lotus flower (at the girl's right shoulder) symbolizing purity and nobility.

Buffalo-boy playing the flute

Children are a common subject in Dong Ho woodprints, and the "Buffalo-boy" is one of the most popular.
Children illustrate family happiness. Dong Ho New Year pictures featuring their bright faces were treasured by every Vietnamese household during the Lunar New Year Festival.

Dinh Tien Hoang crossing a river

King Dinh Tien Hoang (born Dinh Bo Linh) was a native of Hoa Lu village, in the Gia Vien district of Ninh Binh province. A buffalo boy in his childhood, Dinh Bo Linh grew up in a time of national disorder. Filled with noble ideas, he rallied forces, put down the 12 separatist warlords, unified the country, and became the First King of the Dinh dynasty in 968 A.D.
This woodprint has its origins in a popular legend. Honored by his playmates as their "King", Dinh Bo Linh slaughtered the buffalo he was herding to give a "banquet" to his "army". When his uncle, the owner of the buffalo, heard this he saught to punish Dinh Bo Linh. The young lad fled with his uncle close on his heels. When they came to a river, a gold dragon surfaced and carried Dinh Bo Linh across. His terrified uncle prostrated himself before this mighty scene and gave up the chase.
The pictures of Dinh Bo Linh are meant to inculcate youth with noble ideals, self-development and determination. The 6 Dong Ho pictures about Dinh Bo Linh are all related to his childhood exploits. None relate to his accession to the throne.
