Where did you or your family go to before arriving in america? Did you go to combodia, loas, hong kong, thailand, phillipines, or indonese before you came to america? Also, what mode of transportation were used, ex. boat, raft, plane, aircraft carrier, 747 boeing, submarine, bicycle and so on.

I rode on an iron eagle, aka a Boeing 747, all the way from Tan Son Nhat to San Francisco Int'l airport.

a friend of mine who is ethnic Chinese from Cholon, told me he walked all the way from Saigon to Hong Kong before comming to the USA, he said he had to pretend he was a Viet and sneaked out.
one of his oldest sisters married an American GI that was in Vietnam during the war and they sponsored the family to come to america.

Walking from Saigon to Hongkong just doesn't make sense. If he had to go to Hongkong, he didn't have to walk all the way. He could just take a train up North, sneak into China then to Hongkong. He didn't have to pretend he was Vietnamese because no matter what ethnicity he was, he would still be locked up if the authority caught him.

this happened in the late 70's or early 80's when lots of ethnic Chinese were trying to escape VN
he had to steal and beg for food and traveled with his older brother

Ok, then he walked because he didn't have money for a train ticket. That makes more sense. Usually, if a Vietnamese were to sneak out of the country from the southern zone by foot, he would take the Cambodian route and then cross into Thailand and end up in a refugee camp waiting to go to a third whitey country. In your friend's case, his destination was Hongkong so his method of walking there makes sense. Also, back then, the Vietnamese authority was quite paranoid about the Chinese in Vietnam so his pretending to be Viet is quite understandable.

I thought part of Hongkong is connected to mainland China. Of course it's impossible to walk to the island.

My dad and his family took a boat to Malaysia, and stayed at a refuge camp for several years until a church sponsored him to come to America.

My family stopped at the Philliphines for a couple of days before arriving in the United States. I remember eating only EGGS during my stay in the Philliphines.
