I was reading another topic and the issue of pure Viet blood came up. Since this issue has probably never been raised, I feel that it's time to do so.
Since Vietnamese in central and southern regions came into contact with the Cham, the Chinese(Ming loyalists, refugees, and immigrants) and the Khmers, it's extremely likely that our blood has been diluted somewhat. So let's see if there's anyone in your family tree (which is traceable) that wasn't born a Vietnamese. Also, state that how many people were descendants of that person.
Let me start first: One of my great grandfathers was a Ming loyalist and there are at least 100 people in my family whose blood can be traced back to him.

Southern Vietnamese. My grandma side is Chinese related (Minh Huong), my dad's side as far asI know come from the Central region and we're pretty much "pure" Vietnamese.

On my mother side, my grandfather is French/Chinese/Vietnamese, my grandmother is cantonese. I know nothing of my father side, but one thing i know for sure is that he's from the north (most likely Chinese/Vietnamese scenario).
But on the topic of Vietnamese saying they are pure blood Viet is plain ignorant.

How do you determine if you're pure? Word of mouth of DNA test?
worker_bee
Dec 25 2005, 12:10 AM
"pure" is very arbitrary. To determine how "pure" your blood is, you need to trace your roots back as far as possible, either through written documents, objects... or through the stories told by your grandparents who heard it from their grandparents etc. Trace back as far as possible and if all the traceable ancestors were born in your country, then you can claim as being "pure". If one of those ancestors were not born in your country, then you're slightly less pure biologically.

Well if I start from 2 generations back, then I "think" I am possibly 100% vietnamese, but that's only going back 2 generations, who knows what I could be if I find out what's going on past then!
But from what I see, both my parent's are from Hanoi, although my dad's mom is most likely Chinese or at least part, but I just consider myself 100% vietnamese, because I can not be too sure.

Yes, that is true. My great grandfather is a Khmer from the province of An Giang in the south, while other members of my family was originally from Ha Tinh province in the north, so I have a mixture of northern Viet and Khmer. But nowadays most of my family live in the south.
