I was wondering if anyone knew about the marriage customs of Vietnam. I am a white american girl and and I am seriously thinking about marriage with a vietnamese guy. I was just wondering if there were any differences in the marriage cermony or just what to expect. I am looking for advice. Thank you.

Hope this helps....

Unlike many other Asian cultures, Vietnamese culture actually favors women when it comes to marriage. The groom's family pays for everything including lavish wedding ceremony and dinner party (I may add on a side note that this used to be an old American custom until the emancipation of women in the late 19th Century turned everything around. Now it's the bride's family that pays for wedding expenses). The thing you must pay attention to is the "greet the bride" custom in which the groom's family must come to the bride's house (at a certain hours of the day deemed fortunate or lucky) to take her away. The bride waits at her parents' place for the groom's party (big fanfare together with traditional dresses) to come and take her to his parents' place.

Guests to Vietnamese weddings usually are usually very generous to the newlyweds. Gifts (usually money nowadays - in the old days it was gold ) help pay for most the services and there are always extra $ to help them get a good start in their married life.
