i know it's not common in cambodia but i heard, read, and watched how some cambodians could be cannibalistic. back in the 7th grade, my teacher who's cambodian told us a story of how khmer rouge soldiers cut open pregnant women's stomach and pull out the fetus. they then fry it and eat it. i also read a book on khmer rouge and some poetries written by khmer rouge soldiers. i remember this line in a poem that said "A man's liver is another man's meal." i watched the documentary on the war between vietnam and cambodia. Lon Nol soldiers would cut open the chests of viet cong soldiers and then take their livers out and eat it. they thought it would give them strength after they eat their enemy's organs. that's all i know..

i remember one more... a group of sihanoukists were protesting against the lon nol govt. back in the late 60's and they barged into govt. buildings and killed two govt. officials. one of them was a victim of cannibalism after his heart was found grilled on the market front.

Angkorwat19 is correct. Some Vietnamese troops, espcially those who came from elite special operation units, did the same during the war. I don't know for sure what other reason for them to do that beside hatred. This act is not usually written in books but ask any former military men of the war, and they'll tell you that it happened.

Similar in the Nanjing Massacre with the Japanese. But the Japanese didn't eat the fetus. What they did was toss it in the air and see which person could stab it on the end of their bayonet before it dropped to the ground.

Well, sporadic acts of cannibalism occur all the time. And I'm certain the Khmer Rouge did commit these brutal acts of cannibalism (along with other crimes against humanity). But it would be unfair to associate Cambodian culture with cannibalism solely based on the acts of an oppressive regime. And for that matter, it's unfair to judge any people based on the acts of a particular oppressive government (except the Japanese of course)*

In all group, Vietcong-Soviet, committed the most atrocious crime in Cambodian history. In lower Cambodia (now southern viet), millions of Khmer krom were killed, robbed, rape, cut open, boiled. In midland Cambodia, the Budoi(secret viet police) created the killing field.

The American carpeted bombing during Vietnam killed thousands of Cambodian as well.

AS I mention above, during many years invasion, our textbooks were compiled and rewrote by most Vietcong elites and Thai. Many of the Cambodian young generation study those sources blame on Cambodian for killing. i read about this somewhere in another khmer forum. khmer rouge was split into several factions but i only heard of the khmer rouge who were supported by viet congs and the other khmer rouge who were supported by the chinese. pol pot's khmer rouge was supported by chinese and hun sen's khmer rouge was supported by vietcongs. at tuol sleng(interrogation center), several khmer rouge officials were killed because pol pot suspected them to be vietnamese secret agents.

nevertheless, don't blame others for what happened to cambodia. fact is, khmer killed khmer during pol pot era. no one else did. you know what else is saddening? there are still some khmer people living in remote areas of cambodia who support pol pot and still think that he didn't do anything wrong. those people are stupid. they got the nerves to celebrate pol pot's funeral as buddhists. that $hit ain't right.

Today in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, a Cambodian court sentenced Heang Hun, a former Khmer Rouge soldier, no relation to Attila, to 18-years in prison for murdering his friend during a drunken argument. After the argument he carved out his friends liver and ate it.
Hun had asked his friend Khin Khoeun over to his home for whisky and conversation.
I have no idea how well of a friend Khoeun was to Hun because apparently Khoeun didn't know that Hun couldn't hold his liquor all that well. Now according to Hun, a small disagreement with Khoeun lead him to pull out a gun and shoot Khoeun four times. Now that is Hun calling the argument between he and Khoeun small. Those are his own words.
After killing his friend over this small disagreement, he had some neighborhood children drag his friend's corpse downstairs where he used a sharp knife to remove his liver and then fried it up in his Wok.
He apparently ate the liver with wine and had a peaceful sleep. Police apprehended Heang Hun in the former Khmer Rouge stronghold of Anglong Veng, after he disappeared from the scene of the crime.
He was sentenced to 18 years in prison and fined $526 to pay the family in the stiffest fine ever handed down by the provincial court.
