I may live their when I get fluent enough, and if I don't I'll be going their alot. I'm part Japanese but from a distance relavite so I guess I look more spanish I don't look japanese that much but for my eyes and my face can get really light and my hair is dark brown. I'm afraid they may shun me because I don't look so much like them, even though I'm part Japanese. Is it tru that the Japanese don't like forengers? And do you think they would shun me and be rude?

Who knows. Do you have a good voice? Try to get a recording company to audition you or something. Though you must be excellent with your notes and directly on top of the pitch!

Well like most countries (in general) people kinda get annoyed if words are pronounced wrong.
But one thing, voice quality matters, but if you can't be on pitch 100% of the time, you're not getting in any recording studio

Yes, xenophobia is in Japan, like MOST countries. I'm not trying to point finger at you japanese so don't take it the wrong way. I just find it annoying when some non-japanese takes a 3day holiday trip to japan and then act like Japan is the most non-racist country in the world.....

I have a Japan born korean friend whose father is Japanese and mother is korean. Eventhough his paternal root is Japanese, he still got "hijime" by kids at school. Argueable. It is between japan and korea. I dont know exactly how xenophobic china really is...though I have heard stories.
As for some names. Ishihara is was the name that went into everyones head I am sure. He is really the only one currently. Though koizumi comes close with his ignorant and naive comments like. "Why are you chinese so angry with me?"
fk650
Mar 30 2004, 12:53 PM
Chinese are not generally xenophobic, at least nowhere close to Koreans and Japanese. A large part of this reason is that China is relatively very diverse. Not even including the many minority groups which range from racial phenotypes from Caucasians to Malays. But even amongst Hans, regional differences are so great, they actually are equivalent to ethnic differences in Europe.
Also, you will never see signs such as ONLY CHINESE ALLOWED in China. This is not even an occurence or reality.
An ethnic Korean who grows up in China will likely identify with being Chinese, because he will not be treated any differently. Foreigners who speak Chinese are treated and welcomed very warmly in China. Chinese have always been culturalists, and have not cared too much about genetic or racial background. That is why China was able to absorb so many different peoples and sinicize them.

It is only natural that generalizations and stereotypes exist about outsiders in every society.
However, Chinese stereotyping is nothing compared to Japanese racism and xenophobia. Take the half-Korean child as an example. If he was half-Chinese and grew up in China, he'd like come to identify as Chinese very strongly because he would not recieve any discrimination. I am 110% sure about that.
