Happy Asian
Vietnam does have little influence in Laos but it doesn't control Laos.

Vietnam commie government has political control to the extent of business which I think u were talking about .................
Silent_Nanashi
Thats not true at all, when you go into Laotion stores you're more likely to vietnamese products than Thai. The only real influence Thai have on Laos is the pop culture.
Sirikittong
False. I have been to Laos over 4 times; the thai influence in the country as a whole is massive. Culturally, socially, and economically. Thailand dominates trade with Laos as well and is the largest investor in the country.
Viety_Cent
eh the largest investor...........? I thought foreign countrys like China or Vietnam would be cuz Vietnam like the second most active business partner in trade market
Happy Asian
Politically I don't think Vietnam 'control' Laos.
yajthaugluv
Vietnam own's laos, that's the truth of it. The government in laos is a puppet.
Silent_Nanashi
^unfortunately

Vietnam does have influence in Laos but that dosen't mean they're been owned.
yajthaugluv
Lao civilians are second class, if convicted they get the worst treatment while vietnamese would get special treatment, send back to their own country. If this and a puppet government is not own by such country than I don't know what is...
Viety_Cent
Viets have special treatment ? didnt know that
Li Jin
I heard from a while ago from my Grandpa he mention something that Lao's government is still being controlled by the Vietnamese government. more like a puppet government. Not sure if this is true or not, but this information kind of disturbs me a bit...
Happy Asian
Lao government is no puppet.

Over-exagerated & not true.

Laos & the Viet r very good neighbours.

Laos played a very important role in helping the Viet Minh(north army) infiltrate all of their weapon supplies & people thru the Ho Chi Minh trail along the borders...to connect with the Viet Cong(south rebels) dureing the Vietnam war.

The Viet Minh & Pathet Lao was also allies dureing the secret war...& the Viet Minh helped Pathet Lao, rid of Western colonial rule...

In an attempt to stop North Vietnamese(Viet Minh) assistance to the Lao, and to prevent a communist group from coming to power in Laos, United States planes rained more than 500,000 loads of bombs & cluster bombs on Laos from 1964 to 1973. Some 300,000 tons of bombs fell on Xieng Khouang Province, an average of two tons for each inhabitant.

Although thru the years.

The generation now r still effected, their r many land mines still within Laos & could explode if stepped upon.

However Laos won freedom from Western Imperialism. That is a good thing.

Down with the hardcore U.S.A airplane bombers, dureing the secret war. thumbsdown.gif

Heil the Viet Minh & Pathet Lao.

What you read in articles and messageboards are all just opinions. If you want proof, then you gotta have some governmental or insider connection.

Laos is controlled by its people, I just hope they are all combat ready to protect there motherland.
Byron
Laos is more like a close ally of Vietnam, where Laos government learns their policies from Vietnam. Basically just like how Japan and Korea are close allies of the U.S and share the same policy there.

No doubt that Vietnam wants to own Laos, but can they? I don't think they are. They have influence over Laos just like friendly neighbors have on each others. European union over each other countries is another example. Also United States and UN have influence over many countries around the world. I am more worried about China than Vietnam.

What truth are you talking about? There is nothing in Laos that the Vietnamese want. The Vietnamese been watching Laos back against the blood-sucking Thais. Without Vietnam, Laos would be another province of Thailand. You don't know how much the Thais want to take all of our land, they tried so hard to wipe Laos off the map, but they can't.

That's ironic, as of now, most every Lao prefers Bak(Thai currency)... Vietnam has already owned Laos as Vietnamese culture and flesh has already made way into Laos. Give it a century and Laotians might not even speak Lao no more.

That's some funny $hit. It's been over 700 years since our ancestors created Muang Lao in the 1300s and we still here, are we not? If you think our culture will disappear then you don't have a clue.

Think how isolated your people were back then... Clearly, Thia has a better influence on Laos than the Viets but eventually, Laos will diffuse.

Thai has influence over Laos like what?
Religion = both buddhism
Language = dialect of each other, don't need a translator
Political = communist and non-communist
Clothing = majority are wearing western style of clothes, so does the rest of the world.
People = Thailand and Laos are sister states, just like Ireland and United Kingdoms

Viet has influence over Laos like what?
Religion = not that far different
Language = definitely need a translator
Political = Both communist
Clothing = majority are wearing western style of clothes, so does the rest of the world.
People = Vietnam has more people, and Viet/Chinese make up about 1% of the total Laos population.

Anything you want to add, please do. beerchug.gif

If you wanted to open a brothels, then try Thailand. You're not likely to success in Laos. Many Old Hmong got arrested in Laos due to the fact that they tried to screw little Hmong girl. Not because of political reason. True story. biggthumpup.gif

All of this is either over exagerated and not true.

Laos gained full independence in 1950, with an independent government. there was no Western Imperialism to get rid of.

the North Vietnamese was going through Laos illegally, and with out the consent of the government of the Laos.

the Pathet lao had very little influence other then the overwhelming military might of the North Vietnamese that support them, if there wasnt North Vietnamese influence in Laos, Pathet Lao wouldn't of gotten any headway or eveb survived.
Manleow
Laos culture has more influence on Thailand, Thailand culture is merely a mix of Lao and Khmer Culture,

Thai culture is basicly Lao, or originates from Lao ppl, So how could Laos be influence by its own culture? it doesnt make sense.
