Vietnam does have influence in Laos but that dosen't mean they're been owned.

lao is closet ally of vietnam or other way around. control lao's goverment is a lao man and the rest of the goverment is also lao. so there your asnwer, no country owns any other country nowadays. agree that vietnam has its influence over lao, but i also agree to anyone who say other way around. cos we are allies of each other. one down the other down. i love lao people

Because LPDR owes Vietnam big time! For Vietnam to allow use of it's Sea Ports, Laos have to give up a lot of things too. Ie... Rights to raw material, land use, and etc. There may be financial gains on Laos' side too but that gain isn't going to help the poor. It's only the rich and educated that will continue to prosper while the poor, poorer. If leverage isn't controlling, than what is?

nungsongsam,

We don't have the know how to run a country, why would we be interested? Strategically and economically, there's nothing beneficial to be in a landlocked country, not to mention the lack of natural resources.lol
Buddhalove
South Koran owes US big time during the korean war also. How is that translate? China and US have a lot of influence over the world affair.
yajthaugluv
Why do you think US bases are there? Even if most debt are forgiven, nothing is free. Countries like S.Korea could be paying some debt back in low interest rates. Like how the US paid the French back for their Revolutionary War. Wouldn't Vietnamese bases in Laos sound good to Vietnam too?
strongbad
The US pulled out of Laos in 1973, as stipulated by the Paris Peace Accord. North Vietnam was not required to remove its forces under the terms of the treaty.

So basicly they used laos, and then they loose laos. After the US left a lot of rich non communists also left laos.

Vietnam does have little influence in Laos but it doesn't control Laos.

wishful thinking. The strategies of Ho was to control over IndoChina. It is tough for them to try to control Cambodia, because we are not lao. Vietnam control Laos in every sectors. If Vietnam wanted Lao to grow, lao will grow. But I guest Vietnam would like to see lao stay as primitive as it is now.
strongbad
In due time, Laos will be great again.

SoCal
I want to see Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam to be great again; to surpass France economically. It is possible.
