P.S r u Chinese ?
StephenDedalusFromAsia
Yes I am, but I can only speak Vietnamese.
Viety Cent
^ wow u chinese but u speak vietnamese kind of weird though....

but yea r u proud of ur roots and background ?

based on the past post in Chinese forum im guessing u want to be a Chinese eh confused.gif

do u classify ur self as a viet or chinese I mean ethnicty u r a full chinese but by nationality ur a viet right????
StephenDedalusFromAsia
Yeah, it is kind of weird. The Chinese forumers think so too.

My dad's side of the family is from Vietnam and very Vietnamese. They rarely communicate in Chinese and we prepare Vietnamese food for special occasions. I've even heard my dad and other relatives say "We are Vietnamese" occasionally, but they also say they are Chinese depending on the situation.

My mom's side is from Cambodia, but is still very Chinese. If I grew up and lived with that side of the family, things would be very different today.

When I meet Asians, I tell them my family is ethnic Chinese from Vietnam. They usually look alittle confused, ask a few questions, and that's it.

haha What does my past post say about me??? I won't lie, but Chinese culture attracts me more than Vietnamese culture, but I always defend Vietnam against Sujien, David Chen, DR, Kumonchu, and the others many times.

I was born and raised in California.

My parent's are Bac 54 and also people that came to the US in 1975.

I've only been to Vietnam once and it was an experience of a lifetime, especially visiting cousins/aunt's that I have never seen or talked to in my entire life.

My mom uses both north and southern words in her dialect. It's really a mix. Pretty even mix too. I probably speak a little bit more of the southern dialect than I do northern, since most people around here speak the southern dialect.

My sister is fluent and I'm somewhat fluent, but my little brother barely knows any Vietnamese.

hmmm... I think language is what defines you the most. Since I speak Vietnamese, I am more Vietnamese than Chinese, but around Asian-Americans where we communicate in English, that doesn't matter at all.

It's funny, even though I am quite fluent in Viet, I still feel alittle separate in Vietnamese crowds, but even further in Chinese crowds, but I still surprised them by understanding the topic of their converstations or saying things only Chinese people know.

It's easy to defend Vietnam when you have morons saying the most obnoxious things. Vietnamese people aren't halfway up their asses when it comes to how they see their culture.

Yeah, sometimes I say I'm Vietnamese and sometimes Chinese depending on the situation. Like if I go to a Chiense restaurant and they ask me if i'm Chinese or not. I just say Viet, because I don't feel like wasting 5 mins explaining all that.

thank you for your respect anh. I promise to spend more time in the Viet forums biggthumpup.gif

When vietnamese people see you do they think you're Chinese or Vietnamese? When Chinese people see you do they think your Chinese or Vietnamese?

I'm kinda like you... my mom is also a Bac 54 but I speak with more of a Southern accent... although I prefer the Bac 54 accent cuz I think it sounds sophisticated.

Anyways, my dad was born in Saigon so he speaks with a Southern accent but his parents are from Mien Trung. Apparently there's a difference between Mien Trung and Hue people... but I can't tell the difference... they both have strong Viet accents I can't understand icon_wink.gif

I won't lie, but Chinese culture attracts me more than Vietnamese culture, but I always defend Vietnam against Sujien, David Chen, DR, Kumonchu, and the others many times.

oh dw i can totally relate

my dad is from tra vinh (dunno where that is or even if i spelt it right)
but he is ethnic chinese (teo chiu) with a tiny bit of manchurian

mother is also frm tra vinh but shes ethnic chinese (cantonese) with tiny bit of vietnamese

i used 2 think i was 1/4 viet but i realised its actually 1/8th or sumthing now

i can speak very little chinese n more viet but my vietnamese is very poor 2
i'll be taking chinese lessons soon

its funny cos its my mum that can speak it but not my dad ......granda regrets not teaching him

so i think its up 2 me to learn chinese with help frm mum

Will u learn vietnamese as well or ur parents not fluent or dont want u speak it .........

do u mean learn vietnamese in addition 2 chinese? i dont get wat u mean sorry

As stated above will u learn Vietnamese as well ........as Chinese .

i said maybe thats very slim and thats if Vietnam will improve itself, i dun wanna come back to a dirty @$$ corrupt country. I'd also only come back to vietnam with my gf to visit her dad's grave since her dad died in vietnam. Thats only if she wanted me to go.
