We all know the popular culture that is sweeping Sai Gon nowadays and that is music but while it's thriving in the music industry, Hanoian kids are creating a different identity for themselves.

These are some things I found, I got all of these on vnn.net if you guys want to read more.

Break-Dancing

"As Vietnam’s IT sector grows stronger by the day, it’s quite amazing to see a crews still popping and locking, laying down all those old moves. But there’s something different now, it’s got a more human element to it, as it washes back ashore on the tide of the new. But on that tide, currents of cold robotic movement met warmer natural rhythmic flow, and hip-hop dancing now seems to have become more of a celebration of the human machine.

Thanh, 29, runs a non-profit dance class out of a kindergarten in Hanoi’s Giang Vo district. A choreographer by trade, Thanh is a dancer of note, having worked with and for an impressive array of Vietnam’s leading pop stars."

Sk8teboarding

"But here in Vietnam, again I was impressed by just how chilled everybody was, from teaching each other new tricks to dealings with the security guards nobody lost their cool, got upset or said a bad word to anyone else. It was all in all, another fine day in the park."

Hey Mr. DeeJay

That's all for now, I think the emergence of a popular culture is tantamount to a burgeoning economy, what do you guys think?

Mostly influence by western culture.

Can you think of any Asian country that's been without? Even Japan--the paragon of Asian popular culture stemmed mostly from African-American influence, now more than ever.

that's pretty cool icon_smile.gif
and although i hope that Vietnam takes in the goods of the West culture (it's hip), i hope Vietnam also sustains the values/richness of Vietnamese traditional culture, and not lose that.

good to hear Vietnam emerging in the "IT" sector. i read an article about that topic a little while ago on the internet. i hope that market flourishes in Vietnam, it would be extremely helpful for the Vietnamese economy. i read that the price for doing "IT" business in Vietnam is about 1/3 the price for doing the same business in India (the leader of IT outsourcing). but with all of that said, i read somewhere that India is starting to look at Vietnam as some sort of partner or outsourcing country to handle some of their "IT" business. hmm... where will this lead to?? hopefully this will be a positive direction for Vietnam, and i hope other countries around the world take notice of the opportunity they have to invest in Vietnam. after all, Vietnam has a literacy rate of over 90%... one of the highest educated countries, if not the highest literacy rate, excluding the U.S.

my bad. i started rambling about an entirely new topic. but about the hip-hop culture in Vietnam, that is cool. that way, if/when i ever get a chance to go to Vietnam, i can relate a little more about their lifestyle over there... since it is popular here.

I didn't mean to offend you Huaren, I was just responding to say that Western influence is ubiquitous in terms of teenage popular culture and hip-hop. The main idea is that the emergence of a popular culture indicates a growing economy since it all boils down to consumerism and there's more complex things in between but you get my drift.
Wow undercover, you do know a lot about the IT sector and for me, I was just surprised to see kids my age having the freedom and resources to enjoy the very same thing I am over here and while our parents' generations cannot relate, our generation sure can. I'm just excited to see Vietnamese youths having the same lifestyle as me in a developed country, that shows a lot about Viet Nam's growth and potential.

i hear you 'drunk on tea'
but Vietnam still has a lot of work to put in before becoming a developed country. but yes, it's nice hearing that they're headed in the right direction... and maybe one day the kids over there can enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that we have here.
