is it kind of the like the Shanghai/Beijing dichotomy, Saigon being the commercial center of Vietnam, and Hanoi the intellectual and political center?

btw, do most viet go by Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon? I think Saigon is a sexier name.

Most people still use the term Saigon, since it is shorter in length. Even in Vietnam, they still use Saigon quite frequently, although it's safer to say Ho Chi Minh to police officers and government workers. Technically Saigon refers to district 1.
dolongdao
ho chi minh city is the official name but many people (including myself) still refer to it as saigon.

Depending in the context, Saigon can be referred to the 1st district, or the whole
city, the biggest and richest city in Vietnam .

Like New York and Washington DC, or ShangHai and BeiJing, Saigon is Economic
center, and Hanoi is Politics, Arts and Literatures one.
toki
woah. where did korea come into this? confused.gif anyways i am sure northwestern obviously knows that saigon is in vietnam and not korea. maybe he was talkin about korea's economic influence? confused.gif most of the people i knew who refer to it or was born there refer to it as saigon

i just got back from Vietnam 2 wêeks ago. I was ther for 2 months and maybe heard TP HCM from TV and foreigners( French, Aussies, etc) I can't remember ANYONE calling it anything else but Saigon. All the locals , even bachys called it Saigon.
~YummyCupcake~
Ho Chi Minh City is a more formal name but a lot of Vietnamese people always say Saigon more. In my opinion, I think Ho Chi Minh City sounds much more sophisticated.

it aint sophisticated when non-viet foreigners (white ppl) say it... they say it so weird and bad, it just ruins the name.
on the other hand, when foreigners say "Saigon", its better and more fluent

i was in VN recently, yea most ppl there call it "Saigon" or "Thanh Pho"
and "Saigon" is the official term for district 1 in TPHCM

Hanoi girls have lighter skin than Saigon girls. They are also slighty taller (about 2-3 cm) than girls from the south ( except for those who has Chinese in their blood, lol embarassedlaugh.gif2 ). Saigon girls are more South east asian -looking than Hanoi girls.
Happy Asian
Hanoi aka Thang Long is located in northern Vietnam, the cradle of Vietnamese culture and civilisation, and has been the proud Capital of Vietnam for 995 years. Apart from political, Thang Long/Hanoi also served as a military center during the various wars with China, France and the US motherfu-kers who bombed my beloved country.

Saigon or (Prey Neakor in Khmer) is located in southern Vietnam. It was once a capital of those dogs who permitted the white men to kill Vietnamese, and it cost our nation 5 million lives which include 1.1 milliom soldiers from the North to liberate (or conquer)it. My family come from there, but I hate it.
PhoShizzle
lol why are u even bringin up the name prey neakor? they wish saigon/ho chi minh would be called that
Happy Asian
They can wish but WTF are they goin' to do? NOTHING!!

The only way for that to happen is to have the Cambodian army invading Vietnam, but that is pretty unlikely since Vietnam win over them 99.9% of the time.

somehow I have the feeling you're trying to divide Vietnamese between North and South again. I thought we are unified and one country. is this how you VCs developing Vietnam. Vietnam is very proud of you VCs.

Keeping the propagandas and divisive message going VCs. You have your comrades VCs Happy Asian and Kenji shinoda backing you up.

edit: when you talk, do you really refer it as Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh? is that too many words for a name of a City? that's why not many people like the name. most big cities are referred to as "city" in other countries too....
