I've just read this article in a Vietnamese newspaper about how sons and grandchildren of the Nguyen dynasty's Emperor Thanh Thai are living in poverty in Can Tho and has to hire motorbikes to work as Honda Om drivers. The interviewee was the third son of Emperor Thanh Thai and younger brother to Emperor Duy Tan.
It's worth noting that the patriot Emperor, his wife and two children were exiled by the French in 1907 to their African colony of Reunion islands and remained there for 40 years. They were repatriated to Vietnam in 1947 and kept under house arrest at Cape Saint Jacque (Vung Tau) until Emperor Thanh Thai's death in 1954. His first son, Emperor Duy Tan was exiled in 1916 and died in 1945 in a plane crash.
