I think a lot of Viets are materialistic. Those who aren't are still forced to be one. It's all family and peer pressure.

Translation (rough, literal and for those who don't read Vietnamese):
Money is god and Buddha combined
It's the springiness of a spring

A lot of Vietnamese proverbs are extremely difficult to translate into English without makeing them sound weird like

"Hàng xóm gần hơn họ hàng xa." = Close neighbours > far living family. Actually not far from "Bầu ơi thương lấy bí cùng tuy rằng khác giống nhưng chung một giàn" meaning.
