If you're a materialistic Viet, you can use these proverbs to justify it LOL.
"Hàng xóm gần hơn họ hàng xa." Yeah, who need family.
"Tiền là tiên là phật" $$$

I think a lot of Viets are materialistic. Those who aren't are still forced to be one. It's all family and peer pressure.

Tiền là tiên là phật
Là sức bật của lò xo
Là sức đo của tuổi trẻ
Là sức khoẻ của con người

Translation (rough, literal and for those who don't read Vietnamese):
Money is god and Buddha combined
It's the springiness of a spring
It's a measure of youth
It's a person's health

A lot of Vietnamese proverbs are extremely difficult to translate into English without makeing them sound weird like
QUOTE (landsknechts)
Bầu ơi thương lấy bí cùng
tuy rằng khác giống nhưng chung một giàn
Anyone care to give it a try?
Edit: It looks like there might be interests in this topic. So, from now on, whoever writes down a proverb should also include an English translation.
