There are several discussions on other forums about this and I didn't know which section to put it in. After reading pieces of the discussions and the comparisons between the Chinese loan words in Vietnamese, I immediately thought I saw similarities between 1) Vietnamese (Chinese loan words) and Cantonese and 2) Vietnamese (Chinese loan words) and Min dialect. The thing is, I can't tell whether if one or the other or neither at all had more influence on the loan words and nothing that I checked on the Internet so far has an answer between the links. I had noticed a lot of similarities in how Min words are romanized and how Vietnamese words were romanized from years ago so it made me wonder.

So...I'll post some random words and ask people here if any sounds familiar to the Chinese loan words in Vietnamese.

I'll color code it:

Min = green
Cantonese = blue

譚 tham tam = (surname)
潘 phuann1 ..pam(?) = (surname)
曲 khiau1 keui = crooked/song
邱 khu1 ..kiu(?) = (surname)/hill
林 lim lam4 = (surname)/woods
良 liong5 leung = good

I don't know.......

Sino-Vietnamese are closest to Hakka and Cantonese.

Probablyalmost exactly mix-Cantonese-Hakka-Hainan.

Grasy is probably, right but here and there I see a word in han- viet that is almost identical to mandarin

Yeah, in many cases Hakka words are also almost identical to Mandarin. Most of the Mandarin-similar Sino-Xenic words are also similar to Hakka.

i just say tam when i say it in chinese. not cool. >__>

maybe that's why my last name is ham? someone wrote it down and the t was dropped maybe?

EDIT: min is hokkien/fukienese right?

Yes, Min is Hokkein/Fukkien.
Ham probably another surname. Surname 譚 above is Dam. Is it others that mispelt your name?
