KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Malays should be given an effective business and motivational programmes by the government especially to change their mindset so that they would succeed in their business undertakings, said a famous international motivational expert, Billi Lim.

The writer of the book "Dare To Fail" said, the New Economic Policy (NEP) was just 30 years old while the Chinese, noted for being very successful in business, had hundreds of years of history in business.

The main secret for the Malays to change was their mindset, he said referring to the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's recent speech which also touched on the Malays' mindset.

"If you notice, there are difference between the Chinese abroad and those Chinese in China.

"China become an economic power due to the investment by the Chinese abroad," he told Bernama here Monday.

He did not deny that a policy such as the NEP was needed but the government should have an efficient programme to change the Malay mindset.

"If the government does not have an effective programme to change the Malay mindset, it is difficult for NEP to be a success," said Lim.

He was confident the Malay mindset could be changed based on his experience giving motivational courses to 100 organisations worldwide since 20 years ago and he himself had also failed in business many times before.

"The Indonesians are also Malays but are different compared to here. We know that the Chinese minority dominated the Indonesian economy. The Indonesian Malays have a strong will power but unfortunately they have no aid such as those offered by the Malaysian government to the Bumiputeras," he said.

"We are too comfortable here (in Malaysia). Why do we need two million foreign workers even though we have a work force of 22 million, we are not Australia," he added.

i think this is true..ive always seen malays who have just started a bussiness about a month back and the next thing i see them riding their brand new mercedes benz

they were too confident and they felt too secured..i dunno how they got the idea..but im sure you guys have experianced this too before..

I dunno, this has being going on for sometime.
But somehow I don't think they're changing their minds at all.
It gives the impression that these babies are overfed and pampered to their whims.
I wonder if they could ever stand on their own feet and face the world like a real human being.

thats y we need to at least try to educate them better..we have people who are very insightful and who see things in a fairly different view from those who are much more close minded..so i think these people need to think better and try to change the whole scene..they need to do something..anything..by reading good books..by going for councilling stuff..anything at all..but they must be concsious of whats happening

True most of the malay population are made up of people from the rural areas.
Although I have doubts of those highly educated ones in urban areas know this but just take things for granted.
Well about educating them, who's going to do it?
The government?
Unlikely.
UMNO Youth.
Not so.

They will keep things as they are blinding the people of Malaysia by telling lies and stories.
Unless someone or a group of Malaysians can make a stand.

i dont think they need to be told to be a better person..it has to come from within...

they dont need to be told to eat when they are hungry..to use their mouth to eat
they dont need to be told to breathe with their nose
they dont need to be told to think when they have their brains..

i think this all kind of come back to basic when we want to talk about a person as a whole..as a person who wants to make big things real..and as a person who wants to keep getting better and those who want to be a better person inside and outside..

i know lecturing is of no use..but somehow education (in any ways) must be continued..people (of any age..of any profession) must always know how important it is to read and keep getting better..

i take a doctor for example..a good physician will keep on reading..educating himself in his speciality to become a better doctor than he already is..he doesnt have to be perfect..but he keeps getting better so he wont fall down hard on his knees..

I've ventured into that area.
Get new ideas and great insights.
Lots of new things to discover.
And alot of help especially those self-improvement books.
But how many Malaysians do read?

Some claim that they have no time.
Some claim that books are boring.
Some claim that there's nothing to learn. (The arrogant lot :P)


Most of the books are written in English but majority of the population are afraid to touch that language. It is how it was 5 years ago but I wonder how things are now?

If we change our mindset, who's gonna create all the wonderful technologies for Malaysia ?

If I was born a chinese I would know my damn place instead of patronizing the very ppl who look upon my kind in disdain.

Well well, ill save my breath, the fact is the fact. You cant change it no matter what you do.

The foul play of meritocracy system only can fool the people in a confined environment but not in today's competitive globalization market place. The "blind" attitude has to be changed.

If you are not really selecting the best from the people, then your team can always remain the most as a mediocre one. The so called "among the blind nation, the one eyed man is the king" applies.

You just do not have the competitive edge in the global market. Meanwhile the good woods are flowing out of the country and let our competitors to use them against our advantage.

That explains why 80000 graduates are unemployed. Degree is simply a product of a rubber stamp work. When you do not have the materials, whatever name you have equates to zero.

It is a joke when the graduates are sent back for retraining of how to use a computer, how to speak English, how to learn good manners for interview. When could these people wake up!

The IT graduates are mediocre in their computer works; most of the government websites are poorly maintained such that PM Badawi at one time was so angry about it. The banking system; just a few months ago in the paper, a small branch manager of a bank in Masjid Tanah Melaka could siphon out RM16 millions from the depositors over a couple of year. The bank only knew that when a depositor could not withdraw his own money.

What a system and what a joke! That is the type of our accountants trained under default meritocracy system. There are countless similar examples.

If we still do not wake up and continue to waste our time and energy in this kind of unproductive prejudice i.e. default meritocracy system, we will be thrown out far behind others.

As time goes on, the difference will be exponential as we can see today we can't afford even to hire our own experts back if we want to.

we have to change for the better side of everything...cos we are not at all near perfect...so why do we have to stop somthing good from rolling towards us?...and plus...it is our hard work and so we can achieve what we want...

malays have to educate themselves more...im not talking about any of the malays in this forum cos i can see we are all up to date with stuff and we dont fall under any of the categories that may suggest we need to change our mind set....but i still think there are a lot out there who need to do some cleaning up their brains if at all its there somewhere

I agree with the topic. My general view on Malay businessmen are

( a ) satisfied with short term gain and enjoy it to the fullest
( b ) always want to be on the safer side by not taking up risky but lucrative businesses.
( c ) when a business fails, it is the end for the businessman, reluctant to build the business again.

the above views are also shared by many of my Malay friends.
