2011 tourism revenue a record high

The tourism business boomed in 2011, with overall revenue up 23.92 per cent over 2010 to 734.59 billion baht, a historic high, despite the flood crisis, Supol Sriphan, director general of the Tourism Department at the Tourism and Sports Ministry, said on Thursday.

He said 19.09 million tourists came to Thailand in 2011, up 19.8 per cent on the previous year,.

The largest number of foreign tourists were from Malaysia, at 2.47 million, followed by China (1.76 million), Japan (1.12 million), Russia (1,014,493), South Korea (1,014,292), India (916,787), Laos (887,677), Australia, (854,064), Great Britain (844,221) and the United States (684,073).

Tourists from these countries accounted for 66.60 per cent of total foreign tourists visiting the country in 2011, up from 57.86 per cent reported in the previous year, he said.

Mr Supol said the number of tourists from other Asian nations is expected to further increase in line with the continuing economic expansion in China, India and South Korea.

The director general projected that the number of foreign tourists to Thailand in 2012 would increase by eight to ten per cent, to between 20.5 million and 20.9 million.

Just curious, How many farang visited pataya and soi cowboy?

I'm sure most tourist goes to Thailand for one thing. And that is Sex tourist. I've done tons of research on this and its obvious why tourism in Thailand is still on the rise, even if the country is in a down fall. The only reason we do not hear news like this is because Thai are afraid of losing image internationally.

How can I lie when it is right there? I am not being bias or favoring any thing here. Isn't it obvious that Thailand is a base heaven for such tourist destination? It is a sex heaven for many foreigner who retire and visit Thailand every year.

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra visited Luang Prabang, a World Heritage town and former capital of Laos, and spent one night there, Noppadon Pattama posted on his Facebook page on Sunday.

Mr Noppadon, Thaksin's personal legal adviser and a former foreign minister, said while in Luang Prabang Thaksin met a lot of people.

The former prime minister was still highly admired by many people who wanted to have their pictures taken with him wherever he went to, Mr Noppadon said.

He said Thaksin was in Luang Prabang shortly after the reshuffle of the Yingluck Shinawatra cabinet was announced.

Thaksin had left Luang Prabang in his personal jet, he said.

He cannot visit Thailand so he was a tourist in Laos.

Yes it was all because of Thai looking down on Lao ppl that got me very furious. I never really had this feeling until a couple of years ago and that Lao slang word on my ppl that got me so much.
And it did effect me, and my Lao ppl around the world and even my community couldn't bare that thought where my parents or the other Lao parent who used to experience such prejudice from the Thai 4 decade ago. It is now that we learned so much and understood what our parents went through after we lost our country and fled. It was the biggest fear and lost we had.

You have to understand that Lao ppl never really had peace and stability like Thailand or Thai ppl. We were always on the run and in wars with our neighbors for a very long time. We have no hope or dream like our neighbors, which they had a chance much longer then us.

I just wish most Thai would understand that, and where we came from.
