After more than 60 years of Communist rule in China, and especially after the Cultural Revolution, Chinese traditional culture has been all but completely demolished. However, the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity, as well as a reverence for the gods and the heavens, cannot be destroyed.

In order to restore and revive Chinese traditional culture, a group of overseas Chinese artists established Shen Yun in New York in 2006. About 90 artists embarked on Shen Yun’s tour in 2007 in the first year, including a dance troupe, an orchestra, solo singers and musicians, emcees, and production staff. By 2009, Shen Yun had already grown to three performance troupes and orchestras of comparable size. Today, Shen Yun counts many winners of international dance and vocal competitions among its artists, and the orchestras include many musicians from world-renowned symphonies and conservatories.

embarassedlaugh.gif The second i heard falun gong had anything to do with it I declined to go. My parents did though. They confirmed they are using Chinese culture and tradition as a guise for their faith. Funny how nothing about Falun Gong Da Fa or w/e the fuk is mentioned on their site. They wait till you pay first. You dont know its Falun Gong until you buy the ticket.

That aside I heard the show was pretty good lol.

If you really think about it, though, most of FLG's beliefs are not that much different from the religious syncretism typical of traditional Chinese culture. It's not so much that they are "using" Chinese culture as they are a particular variant of Chinese culture (e.g. a modern variant of Chinese folk religion).

The way I see it, the whole thing is just a tragedy. Most FLG believers were originally old women who sought spiritual methods to improve their health and fill their time. In fact, in the beginning, prior to the confrontation with the central government, FLG was actually promoted by certain local governments in China and, at least in one instance, used in foreign cultural exchange. The confrontation with the central government created a persistent group of people isolated from and suspicious of Chinese society at large. Then foreign governments, e.g. the US, swooped in to take advantage of the situation. The whole thing could have been handled in a completely different way.

QUOTE
“Mixed races” are supposedly excluded from the “truth” and “have lost their roots, as if nobody in the paradise will take care of them. They belong to nowhere, and no places would accept them…the higher levels do not recognize such a human race.”

According to Mr. Li, the offspring of mixed race unions are therefore “intellectually incomplete” or “with an incomplete body.” In such cases, only he, Master Li, can help and “take care of it” (i.e., resolve the “incomplete” state). However, that can be done only if “such a person wants to practice cultivation.”

Li Hongzhi also encourages hatred of homosexuals. He has said, “The disgusting homosexuality shows the dirty abnormal psychology of the gay who has lost his ability of reasoning at the present time,” Li Hongzhi wrote in Volume II of “Zhuan Falun,” or “Turning the Law Wheel,” which was translated into English in 1996.

In his talk in Switzerland, Li Hongzhi also stated that gay people would be “eliminated” by “the gods.” Asked in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1998 whether gays could practice Falun Gong, Mr. Li answered, “You can cultivate, but you must give up the bad conduct.”

Hate groups like this shouldn't be tolerated, even if they're under the guise of a religion. They all need to be driven out and banned.
