What do you fine folks think of Funan? I have always thought Chenla was the first Khmer State. With its predecessor being a multi-ethnic society. Since the oldest Khmer inscription is dated - 6th century (612 AD?). I too think Angkor was a multi ethnic society with its 1 million inhabitants. Do you think past Khmer empires were mixed group of people like parts of Srok Khmer today? I would have to say yes due to Funan being a large trading port and Angkor being the city it was. (please don't misinterpret this post as something negative)

here's the fact:

Zhou daquan say the high class ancient khmer were white skin and the low-class were dark skin.

maybe they were mix race.

but then again he explain the reason why their skin are white" is because the rich khmers always block themself from the sun, like carrying a umbrella all day outside " say Zhou Daguan, page 54


As you can see khmer carrying a Umbrella on a non-rainy day to keep their skin whiten is still practice today

This has nothing to do with skin color. It has to do with the fact that Funan was a large trading port. Skin color isn't indicative of ethnic groups. As most Austro Asiatics are darker as well as the Chams (Austronesian).

Edit: and that negritos and Chams predated Khmers and other Austro Asiatic groups in the region.

I also Believe that The Khmer from Angkor develop the Astronomy from the Greece not from India.

Tell us more about Khmer astronomy and why do you think it came from Greece.

I could also say that ears1999 have a limited translation of ZDG note. He should find the right one.

Speaking of technologies and advance civilizations. What was the downfall of Khmer empire? or rather why were we not able to keep up with our ancestors. I'm sure foreign rule during the dark period and the killing field aided in the deterioration of Khmer knowledge.

Simple, It was Khom of Lavo who first built and ruled Angor, not local Khmer.

What does the naga buddha signify? Queen Soma?

Most of the great civilization of the world are not eternity... The rise and they fall! Khmer is one of those!!

The word Khorm is used intern of the great Angkorean empire by the Thai after the Siam for their political troll and only these fault Thai here believe in this kind of logic.. I believe that is one of their Thai treasure!!

Off Cause there is not only one race in such a huge land like during the Khmer Empire... and sure the darkness of fall of the Khmer Empire leave so many doupt to Cambodia and the world.. and it is become more concerning by the Thai who very close to own this civilization which a great advantages is waiting for Thai government and evil concept since the born of the Siam who was the mix of The Tai-Mon and Tai-Khmer who always lead this country for many centuries... U guys may not forget that Thailand is one of highest rate of the military coup d'etat... Thai always over throw their leader if they found that they don't like, while Khmer always hold on with their leader it doesn't matter how worse are them.

Khmer is one of the unique race, historically, mentality, philosophically... is own this civlization.. which share the similarity with other great civilizations on earth.

What the First Khmer Kingdom.. Is it true that what we believe that the Norkor Phnom or Funan is was the Khmer kingdom... I would say I am sure is that the Word Khmer is yet existed.. but the word Naga to refer its people.
If say Chenla, For me I hardly separated these two state Norkor Phnom nor Chenla is difference people leader I would say Yes it is later...

Norkor Phnom is the intermarriage state of Khmer Women(Naga people) and the Javanese man(and later these people call them self Cham). but later Norkor Phnom was capture by other Indian man who marriage with Khmer woman and get supported by the population of the people of Naga (Local). after that the Javanese are push to Champasak and later on become Norkor Champa.

So then u need to understand how they name country and its people.
Most state names its people after country name. So when they found the place they will name them self after place or anything that they feel it make them difference from other.. (People migration all over the world)

Funan is one of a state in SEA mainland calls by the Chinese
Norkor Kokthlok is name was call by the Khmer them self for their first state.
Sakakthvib (Sakak and Thlork Tree are very similar tree.)is the name that Indian call Funan or Kokthlok...
Funan at least come from the word Vunam which the old Khmer world and Phnom is the modern word meaning Mountain.. That is what Khmer base and call it Norkor Phnom,.

Javanese from Malay or Indonesia who practice Indian religion.. name them self as Cham after they were pushed to Champasak.
The Indian call the population of Sakakthvip as Naga because we look like Naga people who live 15km away from Mombai.

Who lead Funan?

It was Khmer-Javanese (Somvong Dynasty) and Khmer-Indian (Sorivong Dynasty) who lead the population, who who the Astroasiatic who worship the animism and ancestor.

Why it call the Khmer?

Because it come from the idea of Somvong and Sorivong Dynasty who the crown must at least the relative of Mother side (queen)..

Don't forget our first leader was our Queen Soma/Neang Neak/Lieyee who was Austroasiatic.

So that mean it people is name after this idea. I believe those people call them self firstly Mee (woman) then Kamee (theyt add Ka because in Khmer-mon language family adding Ka is make the word more stronger for example the word Kay (Scratch) Kakay mean Scratch more stronger and quicker...) then Khamee and Khmee then Khmer as the last..

So Why there is two Dynasties Somvong and Sorivong?

Because at first our queen Soma/Neang Neak/Lieyee marriage the Javanese -Huntien and establish the Somvong Dynasty meanly Moon Royal Bloodline, control all over Funan with many small states under his command included Chenla.

Later at least the 4century Brahman Kaundiny from North-India marriage with a daughter of at least one of the powerful family in Funan then conquer the Somvong Dynasty and establish the Sorivong Dynasty.

Cham Relationship during the Somvong are always good but during to Sorivong are mostly separated and war.

So then the Somvong who still lead the Chenla go to take revenge on Samvong of Funan then call them self the King of Chenla which cover the Funan.

Chenla during the other Princess Soma was really weak sooner later Chenla break into two and later under control of the the other Javanese (known as Enemy)

in 802A.D King Varaman come back from Java (he is the intermarriage between the Somvong and Sorivong) to over throw the Javanese and control Chenala and later Name this Country as Kamvuja. and created the story of Eysei Kampu and Neang Mera which synthetic of the Somvong of Huntien and Sorivong of Kaundinya as Political Solidity.
and the Result is Khmer Empire!!!! ^^

So why call Khmer Empire?

Note: The crown princes of Funan-Chenla-Angkorian must come from at least Mother-Side (Queen) So that mean They are the people who respect to The Mee so now a day we call them The Khmer.
