Mai is a Vietnamese common last name. There are so many famous Mai s in Viet history. For example, in 1860, Mai Xuan Thuong was a patriot who started Can Vuong movement to fight French colonists. In literature, Mai Dinh was a famous figure for Han Mac Tu to write his poetry. Recently, we have Mai Thu who is a famous artist. His works are borrowed and displayed around the world by Smithsonians.
My first girlfriend was Mai Thi Nhu Mai. After knowing her I have consumed too many Mai Tais because she's good at giving me heartaches.
Mai is also a common first name. "Mai anh da eeeew em that roi, anh da eeeew em that nhieu, mot tinh eeeew qua co lieu..." is the lyric of Mai song. So, not to mention last name, in general Mai has always been something that Viet people would remember, like Mai during Tet.
