It's a pity you can't read vietnamese ( am I wrong ?) because in vietnamese history, the last Dynasty is Nguyên, and it is common for people to change their name that of the ruling dynasty in order to benefit from favours, some might experience coercitive name change because of the omnipotent imperial administration. Moreover, a lot of chinese vietnameses, heirs of Ming dynasty who fled China to settle down in South Vietnam, have adopted this name by gratitude towards the Nguyen Emperors.

yeah my mom told me that about the Nguyen last name too. mainly anyone who holds an imperial status has to change his surname to Nguyen cuz it was law back then.
I didn't know that Chinese refugees also adopted the last name. Interesting.
As for Le I think it was Lai in Chinese. at least that was what my mom told me. Truong was Cheung, Tran was Chan, Thai was Choi, Ly was Li, Pham was Fan, Vuong or Hoang was Wong, and the list goes on...some of the original Viet last names were Bui and Thi...and those are the rare ones.
LoNeLyDaIsUkE
yeah i dont think there are many pure viets with the last name

bui and thi

Hhm I thought Hoang/Huynh was Huang. That is my mum's last name

I have an uncle in las with the last name Lai too, but that's not the same as the Chinese Lai. I thought he was Chinese at first, but he told me that his last name originated from the Vietnamese moutain tribes, the Hmong or something like that. I forgot, and uh...you shouldn't look at spelling alone cuz Chinese don't use alphabets biggrin.gif But anyway, I'm just basing these last names on Chinese-Viet translations and some historical texts.

As for Huang or Wong...I'm not Chinese so i'm not 100% sure, but i think they are the same except that Huang is Madarin and Wong is Cantonese.

Wow, I didn't know there was different Lai's in VN, but also I cant seem to differentiate Kinh names from Hoa ones , they're all like Ly, Tran, To, Troung , Chu Duong, Chung, Huyn all these people's claim to be Hoas but Kinhs have these names too .... Le might be pure Kinh though, my grandma was a pure Kinh with the name Le..

Stop considering vietnamese names from the western perspective ! the name system in VN differs a lot from that used in white cultures.

Unlike westerners'name, the vietnamese name must be considered on the whole . People are identified by their surname and their first name altogether (the surname ALWAYS precedes the firstname) . In Vietnam, the surname alone doesn't matter. So for those guys, living in a western country, who want to transmit their name to their children, one way is putting you surname and first name on their surname.

As for me, all the Johnson, Andersson,Jackson, SMith, Bean, Garcia, Klein, Gross, Martin, Schumacher... suck . OK ! And I am sure that they are no better than mine.

If you aren't satisfied with your name, then change for ...Michael Jackson and never claim yourself as an vietnamese or so... It would be ridiculous to see a plain yellow asian bearing such a name .
