Dinh Duc Huu, 47, is a Viet Kieu (overseas Vietnamese) with a successful career in the US. A doctor of science at the age of 28, Huu is a highly respected scientist in the US. Fuelled by his love for the homeland, Huu returned to Vietnam in 1997 to set up the American Technologies Inc. (ATI) with investment covering four fields of oil and gas exploration and exploitation, ecological tourism, aquaculture and information technology. Huu spoke with the press on the occasion of the commencement of construction of the Bai Dai Ecological Tourist Site in Van Don District, Quang Ninh Province.

Could you tell us a little about yourself?

I've been living far from home for 28 years. My ancestors come from Giao Thuy, Nam Dinh Province, but my family lives in southern Vietnam. After finishing secondary school, I went to the US to study further. Leaving Vietnam at the age of 19, I studied in America for 12 years and then started working there. I worked in a US atomic plant for 12 years, where I was assigned to manage an atomic plant with capacity of 1,200MW in Louisiana State. In 1990, the Government of Vietnam called for contributions from Viet Kieu for the development of the country, so I cam back Vietnam to establish the ATI. Initially, ATI was based in Louisiana City; after two years we moved to Tennessee State. In 1997, I came back to Vietnam and officially established the ATI here. Presently, we manage three companies. ATI US continues to grow; ATIP operates in exploring and exploiting oil and gas in Vietnam; and ATI Vietnam operates in the three fields of aquaculture, ecological tourism and ecommerce.

In 1990, you received information about incentive policies applied by the Government of Vietnam to seek investment from Viet Kieu patriots. Was this the motivating factor behind your decision to establish ATI in Vietnam, or were business demands?

As you know, I am a pure scientist coming from a farming family. My parents do not run any businesses. During 12 years of study in America, I had no business experience. I have succeeded in my work and can earn a comfortable life in the US; but, I always wanted to return to Vietnam, and I think that I will be able to contribute much more to the home country if I am financially prosperous and experienced in management rather than bringing home technological knowledge alone. Hence I established the ATI in America in 1990, and then decided to come back Vietnam.

I can see your patriotism in the pride you take in your native country. What has satisfied you most in your business in Vietnam since 1997?

I am most satisfied with the generation of jobs for my country people, as they are good-natured and warm-hearted. By working for me, 300-400 residents in my native village can earn more income, spend more and contribute further to society. I think there are many talented entrepreneurs in Vietnam; together with them we want to make our contribution, however small, to the development of the country. We expect Vietnam to be capable of walking side by side with developed countries in the near future, so that we can be proud of being Vietnamese.

So in what area are you not satisfied?

I am not satisfied that a small number of my employees may harm big business by chasing small profits. But I emphasize that such employees represent only a minority, and I consider it a small problem, brought about the poverty that many people still endure.

Exploiting natural resources and developing ecological tourism are main activities of the ATI. What do you think of the existing conditions for ecological tourism in Vietnam?

First of all, let’s look at the actual potential of Vietnamese people. Many are afraid that we lack capability, but I don’t think so. We are capable of doing business in this area, and we will move on from the simpler to the more difficult ones, in conformity with some rules. We must not destroy natural landscapes and use too much reinforced concrete in construction, as it is very costly to modify a completely built work of reinforced concrete. I think our businesses must be based on natural elements as this is a popular trend the world over. In Nam Dinh, my native land, many farmers have become skilful artisans, and are the makers of all statues in the Thac Da Ecological Tourist Site. Their works are praised by American and French visitors. I think Vietnamese people have great potential. We are not xenophobic and always willing to listen to interesting ideas form others, but first of all we need to make our own best effort.

You left Vietnam when you were very young, but from what you say, you seem to have a strong awareness of Vietnamese culture, especially that of the Ha Long and Bai Tu Long area. Such knowledge is necessary for those who want to develop ecological tourism. How have you learnt about the indigenous culture?

Living abroad I may be physically distant from my native country, though I remain spiritually and intellectually very close to it. When I was a student in America, I often articles and read books about Vietnam, and called upon my friends to look towards the homeland. To me, America is only a place for study and doing business. All members of my family communicate with each other in Vietnamese. We often talk about Vietnam and our future plans there, and sing Vietnamese songs, eat Vietnamese food, just as we would if we lived in Vietnam. I cannot sing a full American song. From childhood, I was impregnated with Vietnamese culture.

You appear to be satisfied with the cooperation of the local administration. Are you most satisfied with its radical ideology, open mechanism or working style?

The sincere and cordial sentiments of Vietnamese people are a great encouragement to me. Their support and kind sentiments even make me unafraid of difficulties and obstacles in business. Such sentiments can hardly be found in American and other Western countries. In Vietnam, if you are esteemed and respected, you will be helped in any way, otherwise you will get no support no matter who you are, rich or poor. This philosophy of living is respectable and needs to be cultivated, as everything has its end, but sincere feelings will stay forever in human souls.

I knew the BVOM.com website for quite a long time, and have referenced it many times in my threads/posts, and I knew it was owned by ATI (American Tehnologies, Inc.), but I didn't know that both were Vietnamese firms...
