International tourists flock to Vietnam after tsunami

Nhan Dan: International tourists are flocking to resorts in Vietnam after the deadly natural disaster in the area.

Many tourists have changed their travelling plans because of the tsunami. They tend to visit Vietnam instead of famous resorts in Thailand or Indonesia which were severely hit by the earthquake and tsunami.

The number of tourists who have booked seaside resorts has risen sharply, said travel agents of Vietnam.

The resort at the Sai Gon – Phu Quoc has been all booked, said Pham Xuan Mai, general director of the resort. He said foreigners, most of whom are Europeans, have booked all the rooms of the resort for January and February.

The number of tourists to the resort is 20% more than the same period last year and is highly unusual, he said. He believed the spike had resulted from the tsunami in South and Southeast Asia.

"Many foreign travel agents want to take their tourists to the Victoria Resort in Phan Thiet instead of Thailand," said Vo Ta Ngoc, director of the Victoria Resort. Just like the Victoria, other resorts in Phan Thiet have also received bookings. For example, the Pandanus Resort has received a great deal of reservations since the tsunami.

Do Thanh Hoa, director of Thien Mai Mui New Company which owns the Pandanus, said Thai travel agents would fly to Vietnam to make a survey of resorts in Phan Thiet before rescheduling tours for their tourists.

While Ms Phung Kim Vy, director of Seashore Resort said she has received many reservations from European travel agents but she has had to refuse many of them because her nearly one-year-old resort cannot accommodate them sufficiently.
