I find vietnamese internet slang extremely hard to translate as well...

I try to talk to my family members who have just come over from vietnam but this slang they are using just seems like gibberish to me!

They are not slangs. They're new way of typing instant messages so that Vietnamese adults won't understand

Slangs are newly invented vocabs for the internet, these are just every day words that have been typed in a different way.

j = i

p = b

nk = nh

ko = không

dc = được

....

Sometimes the spelling is morphed to sound like the dialect of a region, like vậy ~ zay, hôm qua ~ hum wa

chym is nick of someone.

It's not dumb. It's purposely made to be hard to read. You think it's dumb because you can't read it. In other words, you're the dumb one.

Thanks, but they are internet slang. Shortened words, abbreviations, etc... are internet slang.

But why though? What's the difference between typing "b" and "p", or "i" or "j". Are they trying to code it so other people can't read or something. The tone thing I understand, typing ' ` ~ ? . is a lot easier than using VIQR, but why the normal letters too?

In phone, you have to hit #4 three times to get to i. But you only need to hit #5 once to get j.

You need to hit #2 twice to get b, but only need to hit #7 once.

Part of it started out because of phone txt messages...but then it became a trend and teens started to type like that even on computer...and then new ways were invented so their parents don't understand what they're chatting

zj = vậy

Haha I guess so. I just think its visually hard on the eyes. On a good note, I think I can read my relatives' Facebooks now.

Lots of them do today...but this trend started out many many years ago when phones didn't have the qwerty board.

Like hoài is pronounced as wai in Southern Vietnamese. But "wai`" is still easy to decipher to they changed it to wei.

The changing of a --> e sort of mimics certain dialect in Central or North Central Vietnam

seo = sao, we' = quá (~ wa)...

Even though the dialect may not do it systematically like the teens

Remember the stories of how some accents in Central parts of Vietnam are made fun of because of their oddness?

Well I think teens of different regions just got together on the internet, and some of them spelled things in their dialects for fun, then teens of other regions saw it, then eventually they just morph everything together to create some funky spelling that doesn't really match any dialect.

I moved to the US so I didn't get caught on with all this 9x typing, so when I chat with people, I still type proper Vietnamese. It's hard to change a habit. My habit is to type proper Vietnamese so even when I want to type 9x language, it's hard to do so. It will slow me down as it doesn't come out of me naturally like typing proper Vietnamese.

Well only the first line was a respond to you. The rest was explaining to people who are not familiar with Vietnamese how the 9x language evolved , which I added in later because I didn't want to double post.

That's how I see people commonly type on Vietnamese message boards lol. It's still easy to understand, not big changes.

Just common spelling changes to mimic regional dialects like zi = di, choi = trời, vậy = zay.

Then the teens revolutionized everything.

I could hardly understand this: "Ko bít ở dau ra cai thu ngon ngu quái zi zay choi"
and now internet slang? I took me at least 1hr to decipher that sentence. Now I'll have to knock something out of my head to see if I can understand the 9x stuff?

My cousin just came over from Vietnam and she writes to me all in that internet slang crap. I couldn't understand a thing and I didn't bother to answer her because I don't want to sound dumber than I am. I think she's mad at me now, or at least thinks I'm a real turtle and takes me a long time to get things going.


Kids, they do the darn-est thing. Some kids are even re-inventing the game paper-scissors-rocks. Now they have paper-scissors-rocks and volcano! What is the world coming to!

Btw, the "ko" thing has been around for a very long time. Both my boyfriend and I use that. It didn't come from txt msg or the new revolution of teen language 9x. It was around as early as when I was in 5th grade, which was like 1999 or so.

It was not originally "ko". It was a k with a little zero superscript. Sort of like this k°

When we took notes from lectures, we had to write things fast and k° was one of our creation to write "không" quickly because "không" is one of the very commonly used words (no/not/non/don't/didn't/cannot/mustn't/shouldn't/haven't...). Since không is zero, we wrote a K and a zero as short hand.
The 0 was small and lied adjacent to the upper half of K. We did so to distinguish the zero from the vowel "o", because if we write it at the bottom, it can be mistaken as "co".

Then computer and internet was popularized. And because people couldn't type a zero superscript quick, they resorted to typing the little "o" and it got turned into ko.

i never liked this "slang" or whatever, i don't like to write any short form or slang words. it'd ruin our beautiful languages.

sến isn't an internet slang, it's a southern slang that has been around for awhile.

It's popularly used to refer to things that are too overly romantic to the point that they seem phoney.

Another popular slang, coming from the North, is chuối (banana). I think it's used to refer to things that are lame, stupid, and useless.

I thought 'chuối' is 'chú ý'.
