[quote]Viet Nam takes medals at Int'l Math, Science Olympiad
12/03/2004 -- 22:42(GMT+7)

Jakarta, Dec. 3 (VNA) - Viet Nam won three silver and one bronze medals at the International Olympiad of Maths and Science for primary school children that concluded in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Friday.

The three silver medallists were Nguyen Tan Si Nguyen (in math), Le Minh Nhat (science), and Nguyen An Hoa (science). The bronze medal went to Nguyen Doan Bao An in science.

The contest, which took place from Nov. 28-Dec. 3, drew primary school children from 11 countries and territories, namely Viet Nam, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Talking with a Vietnam News Agency correspondent, head of the Vietnamese delegation Le Ngoc Diep said that the contest was a useful testing for primary school children. The Vietnamese school childrens' achievements were not as high as they should have been as math contestants had to use dictionaries for English economic terms. Meanwhile, pupils from Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines are very good at English and are accustomed to these economic terms. Vietnamese pupils will record higher marks subsequent international contests if they are better prepared for them, Diep said.-Enditem[/quote[

Dang we need to encourage more Vietnamese in Vietnam to learn English, if we want to get gold next time instead of silver.

That's crap. How the hell primary school children in Vietnam should understand English. -_- this is like telling us to be more westernized.

Hey they should have an english course at elementary school.

In Canada I had to learn both French and English as well in elementary school.

Fact is a Vietnam that can speak English would really boost our economy.

Your the one that likes Japanese music, even though you aren't japanese. So we might as well learn a more useful language that's for sure.

Hey beggers can't be choosers. Having our children learning 2 languages in school so they can get a better education and thus a better job is a hell lot better than right now where they are working in some Nike factory. That's for sure.

True that though, but English is more focused if the student will major business or travelling agency stuff. English is taught like how Spanish taught in America. You'll learn it and then just forget all of the craps.

This article raises a lot of questions:

According to this article, the competition is about Maths and Science for elementary school. Why on hell have youngsters to learn English in order to learn Science. I think that this competition is really unfair because filipinos and Singaporean are obviously avantaged since they are educated in English.

Mastering English is not key in success: English has been official language of Filipinos for years, their economic performances are far behind that of Thailand, Vietnam, and China however. Most Vietnam native professors in universities of Western world didn't attend their primary schoolings in English, that didn't prevent them from achieving their professor tenure.... English doesn't make you smarter !!!

Look at Japan: Japanese official complain about poor english proficiency of their compatriots, however, Japan is the second economic power on earth, they won several Nobel prizes...

The point is about The quality of english: In Saigon, there are plenty of English courses offered but few of them are worth it. Generally, they are taught by some vietnamese teachers who have never come abroad. When a course boasts a native speaking instructor, it's probably just a western backpack tourist happy to earn money so easily (it is a case for american english centres).

Self-esteem is key to success, Vietnamese language is no worst than any other, and the language and culture is what bind us together within a nation of Vietnameses.

Let us teach correct english for those who want to. But don't impose it everywhere.

Sometimes, I feel sorry when I receive Tê't greetings cards printed in Vietnam with "happy New year" , " Successful Pig year" ..... not to mention the addresses translated in English.

Cheers

Too be more specific, Vietnam lack of English profiency. This bring back some article ago saying Vietnam secondary language is English and we're lack of it as when it come to competting in English category? In other word Vietnam should have been more prepare for such event.

English is a universal language and for a country to learn more of the language is beneficial but not compulsary because for people who want to just work around the areas in their country, English is not more than a hobby to learn. It really depends.

As for the contest, I would say that it is quite unfair. They should have made each student's contest in their own language, therefore each student would have the same amount of chance of winning.
