Hi, I was wondering what does the name Saigon mean in Vietnamese?

I heard its got relations with China's Xi An ..... in Cantonese would be Sai Ahhn

It doesn't mean anything. It's just a name

There is a street called Saigon and a street called Hanoi in Hong Kong (Saigon street is near Jordan and Hanoi street is very close to Carnivon Road). In the 1900's, there were a lot of Chinese immigrants going to Vietnam for work. South Vietnam was then a booming country with 17,000 businesses and a dominant economy in Asia, with output only second to Japan.

Some Chinese made the money and then went back to Hong Kong. Some went on to Singapore such as the Lee family. A lot of Chinese in Vietnam are related to Chinese in Singapore because of this event.

There are two theories where the word Saigon came from. First, it is a bastardized version of the Cambodian word " Prey Nokor" which means cottonwood. Second it is a bastardized version of Cantonese "Tay Ngang" which means barrier.

Really! I stand corrected. I was always told that Prey Nokor is "cottonwood forest" by many people. Please don't call me by the pejorative epithet "youn". We don't have a degatory term for Khmer.

I have visited Kampuchea many times and am enchanted by its beauty, culture and gentle people. I love Phnom Penh's wide boulevards and Angkor Wat's Bayon.

I agree. Vietnamese should vacate the Khmer land and give back the control of Kampuchea to Khmer people. We have done enough harm to the Khmer people with our century-old political and economic control. At this rate, it wouldn't be too long before we make Khmer people a minority in their own land.

Well, ahem didn't you people copy the sanscrit from the Indo's ... but yea the Latin alphabet is much better than all the other systems... and yes Vietnam used to used the Chineses characters which was replaced by Latin alpha's ... it is much easier to learn

It's so partly due to genetic causes, my friend, just like a majority of Cambodian people are so dark. And this is a fact, too. btw, this thread has nothing to do with the height of Vietnamese people.

don't you think it is also due to Food ? Most of the young Vietnamese i know, who were born and grew up abroad, fed like westerners, are no much smaller than westerners.

^ I think it is due to diet. eg. i grew up eating mostly asian food, and i ended up being 5'8, my cuz is 6' - 6'1 and he eats mostly aussie food. Then again... his parents are around 5'6 and 5'3 while mine are like.. 5' and 5'4... lol

I'm 180 cm, when I was in Vietnam, didn' eat enough , hardly 200g of meat a year but, changed diet when arrived in USA then in SWitzerland , eating a lot of chocolate, swiss cheese ( and some French cheeses too), was not lucky enough to eat Vietnamese cook frequently ( Vietnamese ingredients very expensive here).

Wildkhmerbuddha is right. I've heard that Saigon means city in the jungle or soemthing that before. I've also heard of other meanings as well. Like Tay Cong, meaning gift to the west (the french) because the Nguyen pretty much gave South Vietnam to the french.
